Okay just was wondering the opinion of the group real oil or synthetic in street rods with early motors from the 60's - 70's

Yes, great stuff. I use it in all my cars.

I've got about 5,000 miles on a zz430. The motor came from GM with Mobil 1 0W30 and a decal on the air cleaner to use only this oil. I've changed the oil twice (at 500 miles and at 3,500 miles), and I'm due for another change soon. My current consumption is about a quart in 1,000 miles, and I expect that to improve. My point is that this motor has always run synthetic, new Corvettes come with synthetic and I'm not so sure about the CW that you should break in with conventional oils.
Having said this, I'm considering changing to a conventional oil this spring, running it 500 miles and then reloading with the Mobil 0W30.
I sure don't know it all, just adding some fuel to the discussion.

It is interesting that some of the new GM cars come with syn oil from the factory. I wonder if they run the motors in a bit after engine assembly is completed. They used to test fire the motors on natural gas years ago.

A local engine rebuilder runs the engines (short and long blocks) with an electric motor on a dyno for testing after assembly. they build about 100 engines a day there.

And my new Silverado truck has syn gear oil in the diff. Do the gears ever wear in ???

just a thought

I've used Syntec from Castrol and Mobile 1 for years.

THe syn oil will hold viscosity much better over the dino oil. I've watched the oil psi change with mileage on the dinosaur oil.

THe synthetic oil psi virtually never changes with mileage or temperature. I only put 4k or so miles on the oil, then change it.

With synthetic trans oil you must run a spragless torque converter in a high horsepower drag race application. THe synthetic oil causes the sprag to slip. This is with high horsepower/torque motors.

In street use the synthetic trans fluid works well.

15 years in the trade and i always though synthetic oil was a crock.
Until I used Mobil 1 what a difference.

My machinist told me not to use it for the first 5k miles cause the rings won't wear in. That says something for the lack of friction. I will use it after 5k miles on my next motor.

I use the stuff profusely. The main features of syn oil are high temperature performance, long term surface adhesion, it is slippery..er, and is stable for alot more miles/time.

As previouly posted, I don't break engines with moly rings in with it (usually iron is okay) and wait about 1500 miles.

It does produce slightly better dyno results at high RPms and helps cold starts with that ugly friction thing.

I have been using Mobil 1 for many years in many different cars. I put over 100,000 miles on an engine with 38,000 on it when I started. At 138,000 my son drove it home after puncturing a hole in the pan. There was no oil in the pan when I took the engine apart. There was also no sludge anywhere: pan, heads, valley, none. Every part in the engine miked standard. I overhauled it and drove it for many more years with the same standard crank.

Oh, by the way, I change the oil and filter in all my vehicles every year on the 4th of July, no matter what the mileage. Have never had an oil related problem or failure.

Hey guys, I built the 355/380hp in my Chev. I broke it in with dino oil and changed the oil and filter at 1000mi. I used Valvoline synthetic. The first thing I noticed was that I had to adjust the idle DOWN twice within 50mi. says something about their claims of less friction doesn't it. Daffy, the rings won't seat with synthetic. They need some friction to seat to the walls. That's why your going through a quart in a 1000mi., unless there's a puddle under the car. I'm no SAE engineer but I do know when an engine runs smoother, quieter, and faster.

This spring I'll run 500 miles or so with fossil 10W30 and let you know the results.
Just to fuel the fire, I've run Mobil one in my CBX Honda for years because of the better protection for an aircooled motor that can run pretty hot. There's a grassy knoll school of thought about oils that's interesting. Some feel that the current auto oils -synthetic or fossil - are not made to the best spec's for oil and engine life, but rather to protect mileage and catalytic convertors.
You should be able to check this out on CBX.com.

I have over a quarter million miles on a 1981 F-100 with the 300 ci six engine and have never had an oil related problem in all that time. I also use it in a 1998 Dodge Ram Quad cab 318 engine. I change the filter every 5000 mi and the oil every 10,000 mi. My first experience with synth oils was in the Army in helocopters in turbine engines that use carbon bearings and very high oil pressures. As soon as my "27" bent six is broken in (about 4000 to 5000), it will also get a new diet of Mobile One. Great stuff!

Daughter has a TURBO car w/85K+ miles, not had a problem using synt (Mobile 1)oil. Dealer actually recommended that she use that.
