Oil Additives (snake oils)

I just got done reading about all the different opinions on cooling, My question is about oil additives, or as someone put it snake oil, has anybody used oil additives and to what degree of satisfaction have you encountered. They all make them sound good in there commercials. You can't walk into any parts store without tripping over there brand of additive there selling. I personally don't use them cause I just don't trust them. Any Comments.

As I see it, if an engine can go 200,000 miles with regular oil changes using a plain ol' quality oil, why would you need anything else?

I usually measure the product on weather or not it is Aircraft certified. This is a very good yardstick (highly tested to rigorous standards) as to the viability of the product. Most of them are not and in my experience do not have much of a claim. Some product additives may work well at first, but with a few heating and cooling cycles they go away pretty fast.

The two best additive frauds pulled in automotive history was the STP thing...perception is everything and yes it was put into every racing car this side of the moon, but basically did nothing except enhance the viscosity of the oil.....and made Andy Granatelli a lot of $$$$ and the other runner up is Slick 50. At least these things didn't do anything catastrophic to your engine.....just your wallet.

Also, some of these may go into racing applications, but never go thru the heat/cool cycles which along with humidity play a part in the livelyhood of the product. Don't think for a moment just because it goes onto the side of a race car that the product is what it says it is. I have been to Winston Cup garages where they won't run any additives (just the mainstrean lubricants) in their engines on the engine or chassis dyno due to the unpredictability of the product.
