I have a brass drive gear on my distributor that wore out. Are there any advantages to the brass vs. the steel gear? 454 chevy

The brass one is for billet camshafts. It doesn't hurt to run one for peace of mind, but it really isn't necessary with most aftermarket or stock camshafts. They are heat treated and won't be affected by a stock style gear on the distributor.

One advantage to brass is it's easier to change a distributor gear than a camshaft. Been there, done that, no fun.

I replaced it with a steel for now. It was available. I also found that the distributor wasn't sit right. It was being preloaded from the oil pump drive shaft. I made a shim to go under the distributor. The motor has been decked. Could this have been the cause of the high gear wear?
