Cool Vanity Plates Ideas?
by Dooce
Posted: 07/16/2001 19:20 EST

I've finally licensed my 32 hiboy (hear crowd cheering in background)!

Now for the truly *pressing* issue ... what should I have on the vanity plate?? Any good ideas are welcome ... they might not have been used here in my home state.

How about..... THUR T2

I have a '36 5 window with THUR T6, it usually catches the ones that don't really look closely. They want to know what "Thursday, T-6" means. No imagination I guess....jb EXSEDAN

What's wrong with original 32 plates? I've got em on my 32 and don't have to ever register it again. Cost 45.00 + the price of the plates. That's why I reside in Oregon, no smog stuff here either. Love it. RP peggys' other half

Well, it depends on wether your state will let you have 6 or 7 letters on the plate. Here in Texas its 6 and in NY State it's 7. If you're retired or about to be, my Dad had "retiree" plates in NY for about 15 years. Let's see now,(90 weight getting hot), there's "PROF32", "PROVO32", or reverse them. "KRUZIN", "KRUZR32", "BWAK" (built with a kiss)....hmmmmmm..... "A32GUY" (no ages allowed over 49!)
"TOPLESS" (probably taken) "32N350", "350N32", "GOTCHA" ....
Any how, hope these generate some ideas..Nice ride!!!

Talking about the good ones being taken....This guy at work decides he wants to get into streetrodding and since he has the bucks he just goes and buys a nice 32 Ford Vicky. He doesn't have a clue about anything and he puts in for the vanity plate "32 VICKY" and gets it! He still doesn't have a clue. He thinks there's nothing to this "streetrodding hobby"....you just buy a cool car and get a cool plate and go to shows and get trophys.

What's the world coming to??

Hmmm...My antique plate says "58 YOMN" as we're allowed 7 places in IL. So many people still can't figure it out, even when they see Yeoman written on the side of the car... they still think it's a Nomad. In IL. we can't mix letters and numbers(like cool32B), and on cars, the numbers come first; on trucks, the letters come first. Go figure.
BTW...what do you others pay for plates (or tags). Here, I pay $80 for my truck plate (veteran), $78 for the car, and $25 for my antique plate, for five years; has to be older than 25 years to qualify.

In my state (Massachusetts) a veterans plate cost $80 a year while a "draft dodger" pays $40 for 2 years. Go figure! Our vanity antique plates are 70 every year.

Just some food for thought Tom. If it weren't for the "purchasers" of rods, such as myself, the guys that need to sell their rods to finance the next project wouldn't have anyone to sell it to. Just because I have purchased my rods does not mean that I am any less of a rodder. I am proud to say there is not one person I know that puts more driven miles on their rod then I do every year (except this one of course). I try to personalize my rods to my own tastes but I do not have the skills to build one myself. Home built or professionally built, all rods are awesome!!!

Denise, I agree with you. I believe that the rodding world is big enough to accomodate everyone with a love for rods. I have always built mine but have no quarrel with those that don't have the time or ability to construct their cars. I'd prefer to judge a person by the quality of person they are. A good guy is a good guy, weither he built his car or bought it. An A--hole is an A--hole...even if he did built the car. Believe me, I have run into many rodders/builders that aren't worth the time to get to know. They may build some nice iron, but they need to spend less time in the garage and more time working on cultivating a personality.

A bud a few years ago bought a anglia with a blown big block in it. His wife went to get plates for it. She wanted BLOWN. The lady at the DMV was very upset and would not issue them. Said that was vulgar. My buds wife told her " If you would spend a little more of you spare time going to church, Instead of watching dirty movies on tv, you would know the difference between the two" She got NASTY 1.
Another bud Floys had BADAS30. He had these for 10 years on his car. One day he got a letter demanding he surrender his plates to the nearst DMV in the opion of the person who sent the letter they were vulgar. That's my story and I'm stickn to it.

Hi Denise!I agree wholeheartedly,if it weren't for the people who purchase finished cars, for whatever reason,be it the fact that thier talents lie in a differant area or whether they just don't have time or the desire...the fellas that do build them would have quite an inventory!Myself,I like to build a new car every year and am very thankfull there are people to purchase my completed projects. Some start from scratch, some are projects that were adandoned, and sometimes they are old hotrods that just need a re-do.The amount of work done to each varies with the time I have available, and the work that needs to be completed. When complete,I don't feel any less pride/pleasure when driving each of them whether I did 10% or 90% of the work myself! It's pretty simple to judge the quality of a streetrod simply by looking at it,but, there are many more things to consider when judging the quality of a person. For me,the fact that he did or didn't build his car is not even a consideration when deciding whether he/she is a good person!!SORRY for the sermon but it is Sunday!! See Ya!!

I didn't mean to start a "bought vs built" discussion when I talked about the guy at work getting the 32 VICKY plate. I just thought it was ironical that his experience in rodding was that there's nothing special about it. He bought a very nice car that a friend of mine built and is winning a lot of trophies and he got the vanity plate he wanted on the first try. I couldn't believe that plate hadn't already been taken. He's not an arrogant a$$--- or anything...he's really a pretty nice guy and after driving the car and BS'ing at shows he is already planning on picking up a project car to learn and experience what it takes to build a car. He is a mechanical engineer so it didn't take much for the bug to bite him.

Sorry if it appeared that I was slamming people who buy completed cars..I don't feel that way. This hobby has room for all of us and like ya'll have pointed out, its nice to have somebody out there that wants to buy a completed car when we have one to sell.

Amen, I hear you. You cant beat sweat equity. I know everything about my car because I did most everything myself
There is a certain satisfaction knowing you know every nut and bolt in your car. I been working on my car for about twenty years off and on finally got it the way I want it,a long time yes but on blue collar wages it was necessary.

I take pics of cosmetic plates on Corvettes. NOBODY does it more than 'Vette owners.
Best one I ever saw:

IOIT2OT

"I Owe It To Overtime"

Next Best:

BRKNWND

I think she meant going fast into the wind, but, who knows ?

LOT'S OF NEAT IDEAS ON THE "PLATES". ON MY PRO-STREET '33 COUPE IN HAVE "UD LUZE". I THINK IT MAKES A STATEMENT. JUST SIT DOWN AND TRY TO WRITE ONE LINERS ABOUT WHAT YOU THINK OF YOUR CAR. THEN TRY TO MAKE THE SAME STATEMENT WITH LETTERS AND NUMBERS...........YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT WILL COME TO YOU. SOMETIMES YOU WILL SEE ONE AT A SHOW, FROM ANOTHER STATE, AND YOU CAN "COPY" THE SAME IN YOUR STATE. MY PLATE HAS GOTTEN ME STOPPED A COUPLE OF TIMES BY OFFICERS OF THE LAW AND ALL THEY WANTED WERE TALK ABOUT THE CARS THEY WERE BUILDING AND AS QUESTIONS. THEY ALSO COINED A PHRASE ABOUT MY FLAMES THAT I USE OFTEN. THE ONE OFFICER CALLED THEM "ARREST ME" FLAMES.............COOL. GOOD LUCK ON YOUR QUEST.
