Wondered if you guys could help.
I am building a '31 Model A streetrod and am looking to use an electric in tank fuel pump. My buddy is a fabricator and is going to build a custom fuel tank. The car has a '96 LT - 1 350 with an Edelbrock 1406 carb. Is there a difference for fuel injected pumps versus carburated pumps. I have found an in tank pump thru Rock Valley tanks. any other advice appreciated. I also need advice on how to plumb the whole thing. o yea a sending unit would be nice also
Thanks Iceman

Hi Iceman, The intank fuel pumps that I have changed were part of the sending unit or at least were mounted to it. Yes fuel injection uses a fuel pressure (pump) way to high for your Carb. Just ask Rock vally they should have this info. The pump in the tank is plumbed the same as any carbureted fuel pump. Hope this helps. Regards,HonestFrank

There was a fairly indepth post on this just last week on the MMC board. They also gave ideas how to fix it, but not quite enough. I too am facing the same situation, and am needing more information. I have a 88 Jeep Cherokee tank im using on a 49 pickup with a 390 engine with eldebrock intake and 600 carb. When you get more info, could you make sure to keep us posted (as Ill be following this thread closely)?!
Dirk
I will be happy to keep you in the loop on what I find out.

Hi Y'All, If you guys want my advice. Don't use a in tank fuel pump at all. If fact don't use an electric fuel pump. They will let you down with no warning. Just say that you drive your Hot Rod 100 miles and your Electric pump goes down. Even if you carry an extra, How much fun will it be to drop your gas tank to change the pump( gas all over, You smell like an old gas station "NO FUN" . Just use a good Mechinical fuel pump, Like a Holly. If you brake down Go to any Auto parts store and buy a OEM pump and be on your way.
Very rare for a Mechinical pump to just stop working. "Keep it Simple" Regards, HonestFrank

Honest Frank,
I wish it were that simple.
I would use a mecn fuel pump if I could but on the LT 1 Chevy block there is no way to mount it. The block was made without the hole for a pump. All of the cars now days run intake pumps and the run 100,00 miles with no problem. The problem is finding one to use in our scratch built situations and plumbing it up right.

Another option would be to use an external electric pump mounted on your frame. It would be a lot easier to change if you had to. Just a thought.

Hi Iceman, I didn't realize the Lt-1 was made for elec. fuel pump only. I change a lot of in take elec. fuel pumps and they are a real pain. I would use a Holley or another name brand after market elec pump. I would also mount it in the trunk or some where easy to service as close to the gas tank as possable. If you buy the pump for use with a carburetor, then just plumb 3/8" gas line from the tank to the pump, then from pump to carburetor. You also want to wire a on/off switch to the dashboard, so if something goes wrong you can stop the pump from pumping gas. Hope this helps, Regards, HonestFrank

THERE IS A big difference in pumps... carbs take 5-7 lbs 5.7 efi LT 1 TAKES 125 AT PUMP..HOWEVER IT IS REDUCED AT FUEL RAILS AND RETURNED TO TANK. RUNNING PRESSURE IS AROUND 42 PSI. WHY CARB ON THE FABULOUS 5.7 LT 1? i have 2 external pumps to run my efi IROC LT1 from a fuel cell. for carb installation you do not need an in tank pump. waste of coin....... iwish you could run efi...although i think the right carb will haul as tronauts too. good luck .tom ----- [pink rod.]
