Splitting a Manifold?

Hi, I have herd that people would split the exhaust manifolds on the old straight 8s
Sounds like something I'd like to try on mine. Did people split the factory unit or was this just some kind of custom headers that were used?
Thx Jdee

Splitting a Manifold?

Of all the years I've been playing with cars, I don't ever remember anyone splitting the straight 8 exhaust...It may be cause they were not as common as the Chevy 6's that every one had. I remember hearing the 8's but they were so different sounding that I'm not sure what would happen if you split it in the middle of the firing order. Seems like someone would make headers for them which would be verry interesting to hear. If you do split it, let us know what it soundes like!! Fred P

Yup, I've seen the split exhaust on a Buick straight 8. My brother-in-law did it and had a really nice dual system set up.

It goes like this you cut just behind the out let and slide a piece of steel up inside and weld the plate in then you cut a hole and insert another exaust flange and there you have it Dual exaust. You can get cast rod if you know someone with a stick welder or maybe you have one....

Back in the olden days we hacksawed the exhaust manifold in two, brazed an end on the one with the outlet flange still on it, and then shortened the remaining manifold piece so it would fit in the space left and then brazed an end and another outlet flange on it. The two "new" exhaust manifolds viewed from the side look like a tee with the outlets more or less side-by-side in the middle.
