Well this one i dont know much about because i have allways stripped all the chrome off my rods. But i am building a car now that i have been sending parts out to be chromed (Big expense) . What do most of you put on NEW chrome to keep it nice while the car is being built. Wax?? or ? I know chrome cleaner is not the way to go as it seems to have a cleaning acid or ? something in it. What brands do you use. Thanks Chomeless in MA.

Hey lost, try a good carnuba wax like Mothers or any name brand paste wax, dont rub it off, wrap the chrome in newspaper heavily and store in a cool dry place til ya ready to use em. Wenol is a neat cleaner, not a quality wax. Sorry slammed in Baltimore.

The best deterrent to rust is oil. If you think there will be a problem with rusting, here is my two cents worth. Coat your chrome with a light oil i.e., WD40 or an engine oil, then wrap it in a cloth that will hold the oil and then stick them in a plastic garbage bag. Or you could just keep them in the house, under your bed. Unless it is like mine, and the wife has it already loaded with all the car pictures and family pictures that we have taken over the years.

Ive used Hoppes Gun Oil for decades, keeps my guns rust free as well as stored chrome, bare metal, fresh cleaned blocks, etc.

If you are worried about the chrome rusting while you are building the car then you need to find a new chrome shop !! Or, get on with building the car in this century. No, any chrome should be waxed and wrapped with something that will not scratch. Chrome is only about .001-.002 thick, extremely hard and is clear by the way. That's the nickel plating that shines. If you have "redish" spots that is the copper showing through the nickel and should be taken back for proper chroming.
