I noticed awhile back you guys talked about not being able to see the taillights real well and someone said put aluminum foil in them to brighten them up. Does anyone make a bright and well made 41-48 Chevy taillight? I would prefer to stay with the 1157 bulb and stay away from LED's. If so, where can I buy a pair of these. Thanks in advance. RRM.

CAUTION: If you use aluminum foil behind the bulb DONT use Halogen bright bulbs, my uncle, god rest his soul, pulled this trick a while back before he passed away in his '39 Chevy with blue dots on top of it and im here to tell ya, if you followed him after dark you were out for a picnic tryin to follow and pay attention to where you were going. They got to be TOO bright! And ontop of that, before his engenious trick with foil he had the tail light housings chromeplated which was even more of a mistake.
Everybody who followed him tolerated the chromeplating, but when the foil came in to play, with the foil not being perfect flat, the little bumps and ridges made for a even more trying experience if you followed him. Instead of the light coming at'cha, it was bouncing all over the place!
See ya

Edcroozer;
Look into the tailight housings by Automotive Fiber Optics.
These are great & increased the brightness of my tail & stop lights by 100% at least & only using regular 1157 bulbs. They are shaped conically insde to "shape" the light through the lens and are also white powder coated to boot.
Sachsce Rod Shop here in Texas has them as well as Pete & Jakes in Peculiar, MO. They sell for $79 with the lens included.

Hey Rat Rod,
We have the '41-'48 lenses your looking for. They're U.S. made and will give you a very bright light with standard 1157 bulbs...I guarantee it! I use them in my '32 coupe. Just click on the "Products" section of this site and then click on "Lighting".

I have a 46 Ford and all I did to my original tail light housings was sandblast the buckets, solder a 1157 socket into the hole, paint the bucket with an aluminum paint and provide a "separate" ground wire for the housing to a chassis bolt. Have no problem with anyone seeing me. Most Rod fenders do not ground good through all that new, hard paint. Use a "star" washer on all ground wires because it will dig into the metal, even through paint, rust. Grounds are the key to good lighting on any car.
