Latest Rod & Custom magazine

I just got mine today -- I love the new format. I had kind of wrote them off, only buying them when I thought they looked worthy. I think I'll be glad I decided to subscibe now. I also like Street Rodder for the technical articles and that, but now it's a lot more interesting and a lot of stuff aimed at the backyard builder instead of the "open wallet rodders". I decided to get some other magazines . . . boy I hope the wife doesn't see the credit card bill for today!

For the bathroom reading now I have:
Street Rod Builder /Feb 2001
Southern Rodder /Jan 2001
Custom Rodder / Mar 2001

Anyone have any other suggestions on good reading materials? Hmm . . . I need a internet hookup for the john. Hehehe!

Street Rodder is the only automotive magazine I subscribe to. Have about 10 years worth in boxes out in the shop. Overall, I think it is the best traditional rod magazine available. I have been reading Rod and Custom since 55 or so. It runs hot and cold. Always has. Like you, I look it over every month and buy it if it has something I am really interested in. Street Rod Builder seems to be getting better. Some of the technical articles are pretty thin. Thought the January 2001 issue was something of a joke. They called a very nice one off roadster a "32" and reprinted an old build Total Performance T build up article (from Street Rodder I think, at least the pictures were familiar). The other articles were OK. Hope they make it. Southern Rodder does not have much in the way of tech but it has good regional event coverage and features some nice cars the national mags will never pick up on. From what I can tell it is pretty much a one man operatuion. Saw a Northern Rodder at the news stand the other day. Same logo style and editorial format. I wounder if there is a Western Rodder too? When I was a kid, Hot Rod was my magazine. They lost me years ago. Have noticed they are giving some space to traditional rods these days. One even made the current cover. Really like the Rodders Journal. Going to buy a one year subscription. $40 for four issues seems steep but they are really well done. We have a couple of book stores here with reading areas. One even has complementry coffee. Like to stop buy and go through all the auto entusiast magazines. If I am lucky, I will even find an American Rodder free of its plastic bag. Never know where you will find a useful idea. Occasionally, I will even buy one.

Helllo gang, I subsribe to 5 mags, Street rodder, streetrodbuilder, american rodder, rod & custom, and autoweek. way too many !! I got sucked in because of the tech articles and then couldn't find the next month so I subsribed. But the mags run hot & cold. american rodder had an interesting one on an English 32 [ blue] pickup . but it wanned after a while.

American Rodder wanes because it's trying to much to be like big brother Easyrider. They have cut back on the bikini babes. Don't get me wrong I like the babes in swimsuits but thats not what I buy a car magazine for. And yes I know its not PC to call them babes. One good thing about AR is that they feature some good traditional hot rods. My opinion.

I got the remainder of my Rodder's Digest subscription in the American Rodder form. I do appreciate them picking it up. I guess I've been reading it for a couple of years. I don't think I'll subscribe to it, though. I do like retro rods but it seems that is about all they show. Yes, they do have other style cars, but it seems that they spend too much space on the retro cars. I agree about the bikini models. I like looking at them, but don't hide the car behind them.

when street rod builder came out i was happy due to the fact they have a lot of tech info and show you how to do things like installing a 4 link from beginning to end..i have the first 3 issues of stb but am missing 4,5,and 6 anyone out there have them? street rodder is also a good one..rod and custom is getting better..but time and time again these mags focus on the cars that were built by someone else other then the owner..and you can`t tell me that they drive these cars on the road..a shout out to the other mags to do stories on the backyard rodder..like bradley miller say`s..i can`t really consider these cars "rods" i could on and on...anyway thats my story and i`m sticking to it.....rod on..

It takes time for a magazine to get turned around. I think Frieburg (< misspelled I know) has it on the right track. It can't be easy to include something for everyone in a set amount of space. It's true you can't please all the people all the time, but in the magazine business you have to try. I myself had gave up on them,it was more depressing for me as I'm a custom kind of guy. I love street rods but a kustom is a little bit closer to my heart and R&C had become Rod,Rod ,Rod Rod & custom. Now it's starting to even out and I couldn't be happier with the situation. I had heard that Frieburg was going to R&C so I got a 3yr sub while I was at the Nats in Aug. He did wonders with Car Craft and I have confidence he'll do the same with R&C.

I subscribe to Street Rodder and Street Rod Builder. Also get the NSRA mag (useless) and GoodGuys Gazette (much better).
Street Rodder has a pathetic delivery schedule. I usually get mine about a month after the issue hits the newstands. I complained but Editor Brian B says it is the post office's fault. If that is so, why do I get Street Rod Builder on time?? Also, isn't Street Rodder a customer of the post office??? They should complain about the lousy service.......
Picked up a Rod and Custom today based on what you wrote. I look forward to going through it.

Hot Rod magazine is slipping. For the most part, the coverage is thin and one of the writers has the most bizzare writing style. I think his name is Jeff Koch.....he writes huge intros that have nothing to do with the car and leaves only has 2-3 paragraphs to focus on the car. I think he might have used a little too many recreational drugs in high school.
