Tranny......how much is the 502 beast drinking? And do you see it out the tailpipes on accelleration, decelleration, cruising, just start up, or none/all of the above. Have you done a vacuum test/static cylinder(s) cranking pressure test and if so what are the results (make sure to tell us what kind of cam that you are running with that reading). Have you read your plugs to see if all of them look oil-soiled as opposed to just one or two. Are you running a PVC valve? Finally....what viscosity of oil are you using and what, if any, break-in schedule did you follow?

If you can answer all of these questions, I bet that all of the experience folks here can help you find the problem proto!! I have not heard of 502s with oil comsumption problems.

Hey tranny, What kind of vavle covers are you running?I had this same problem with a small block. I didn't have the baffels installed under the pcv valve. It would suck the oil out of the cover. Hope this helps, keep us posted.

Hi James, welcome to the SRS gang. My 502 Gen V uses a quart every thosand miles but I don't concider that out of the norm for a motor of that magnitude.I have had hot motors use much more than that.I had a 57 Chevy that had the same oil consumption and about 100,000 miles it stopped using any at all.Now figure that.I have tall valve covers with baffles in them....Ray

tranny, a fellow club member had the same problem with his 502 in a 55 chevy. he took it to a very experianced local garage. he did a compression check and it was ok. he pulled the heads off and the factory installed the valve seals WRONG. I was told this wan't that unusual in crate motors. after he fixed the factory mistake he didn't have any more oil problems.

thanks for the reply's. It uses a quart every 3 to 400 miles i cant see it smoke to bad. It smokes a little when first cranked but not like guide seals. The tail pipes are black but not wet. i am running a pcv valve tall valve covers. The moter is completely stock so i dont know what cam. I had heard of some rings not seating in these but dont know what reason or where to get more.O.E.M.? or aftermarket?or why they didnt seat.
