700R4sale

Hi ! Just ran accross an ad in the local paper that reads; F.S., 700R4,for a V-6, works but needs a pump. $100..
Were 700's made for just V-6's or does the owner just have a vehicle with a V-6 that happens to have a 700 that will also fit a V-8? If so, I will be on his doorstep with cash in hand!!
Hmmmmm, what pump would be needed but the tranny would still work????

Hi Fred
Yes the transmission will fit a V-8 if it came out of a chevy. The 700R4 is like a turbo 350 only it has overdrive. Make sure it is an early model, other wise it will be computor controled. I'm not sure what year they became computor controled,but if it is you will see a Big elec. plug in on top in the oil pan area. I would stay away from it and look for an earlyer one. I have a '94 700R4 in my shop and it is controled. Hope this helps. Regards,HonestFrank. Oh yea if the pump went out the trans will need a rebuild at least, it may need lots of hard parts
which = $$$$

Full size chevy pickups, S-10's, and astro vans with 4.3L v-6's all used a 700r4 that bolts right up to a chavy v-8. Make sure its not off of a 2.8 or 3.1L. They have a different bell housing. I have installed one of these in my 38 chevy coupe and it works great. Torque convertor lockup wiring is somewhat of a pain but well worth the time.

Hi Fred, I did a little checking on the 700R4 transmission. The year models you would want are 1987 to 1992, The reason is 1986 (700R4) is light duty & 1993 has its shifts computor controled. To ID the '93 & up have a large elec. plug in trans case above oil pan. 1986 & older don't have extended valve body (small oil pan). So be carefull. Regards,HonestFrank

Thanks for the info guys! just what i needed. Talked to the owner and its an '86 from a 4.3 engined van. By light duty, what would that be in HP ratings and keep in mind my car weighs about 1600 lbs. Would I be better off waiting and looking for a 2004R? Gear ratios on the 700 are nice, especially in first gear, so now I'm between a rock and a dump truck! Rebuilding the 700 and including a rebuilt torque converter would add about $250 to the $100 asking price. If it's light duty then..........?
Thanks

Hi Fred
I really don't know what else to say. I own a small Hot Rod shop. I see a lot of Turbo 350's & 400's, so when i called the shop that i send my transmissions to ,and asked about the 700R4 He knew i was asking about putting the transmission into an older car (hot rod) and he said not to use the '86 transmission. If you call around to local parts (junk..Man i hate that word)Yards i'm sure you could buy a rebuildable 700R4 from a '87 to '92 Chevy for $100. Then you will have something GOOD in your car. This picture (if it shows up) is a 700 case. The casting line running up thru the cooler line fitting is a goo indication that the trans is late enough unit to use with out updating many parts in the unit.

A 4.3 unit has fewer frictions in it than a V8 700R4 does. The second gear servo sometimes is smaller too.

Or you can visit my page for more info. I nned to update the site a bit with 4L60E pics for ppl to know what to look for on the E models.
