Steering columns

I'm getting ready to hit a few junkyards in search of a GM tilt steering column. Are there any certain models or years that are more desirable than others? Are there any that you should stay away from? I'm building a '32 coupe Hi-boy. Thanks in advance for your input.

FWIW I'm building the same car and I'm using a column out of a 64 Ford Galaxy.
I'm not using a GM tilt just because i don't like the fat column.
This is 2 inchs in Dia. with a shifter and cancelling signals.
Should be easy to hook up but i haven't gotten there yet either.
I'll have to drop it down a bit more to make up the for no tilt but the length looks perfect.
My 2 cents worth

I have heard that a full-sized GM van has the most tilt. I don't know if this is fact. Has anyone else heard this? The one in my '32 is out of a Chevy Astro and I could really use one more notch of tilt with the angle of my steering column.

Hi Mac, If you look for a little early GM column ,say mid to late 70's tilt. It won't have the big bulkly side on the column of the 80's GM tilt columns. You will need a column out of mid size car, like malibu, Olds cutless, Buick skylark, Pontiac cutless, etc. You will have to look a little harder but it will be worth it. The ideal length is 28" to 32" Measured from where the wheel meets the column to the end of the column under the hood (end of shaft in the column). I like GM columns because Borgison makes U - Joints the fit right on. Also because all the after market wiring harness are made to plug right in. If i can help more let me know.Regards,HonestFrank

HI RAT, BEFORE YOU GO TO THE BONEYARD YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHECK OUT AN IDIDIT COLUMN, THEY HAVE THEM IN UNFINISHED STEEL AT ALL DIFFERANT LENGTHS AND CONFIGURATIONS. NEW IS FAR BETTER THAN USED. AND FOR UNDER $400 YA CAN`T BEAT IT. FLAMING RIVER ALSO MAKES QUALITY UNITS. I`M USING AN IDIDIT IN MY DEUCE, A REAL PLEASURE TO INSTALL WITH THE COMFORT OF HAVING NEW PARTS. CHECK THIS OPTION FIRST BEFORE YA HIT THE BONEYARD. I`M SURE THERE ARE MANY MANUFACTURERS OUT THERE, BUT THESE ARE WHAT FIRST CAME TO MIND. BALL`S ALSO SELLS GREAT HARDWARE FOR YOUR COLUMN MOUNTING AND STEERING HOOKUPS. ...ED

I used a 77 camaro column in my 31. Tilt and no shifter. Just the ticket with my Gennie shifter.
