I grew up in the finest years of Smokey and I think my fondest memory was how long he go away with running engines with longer rods than stock but kept the same displacement. Talk about techs pulling their hair out.... I'll certainly miss him but some of his work lives on in many books about the man and his genius. My condolences to his family. Fred P

Smokey was my engine hero, reputed to have iniated, log rods, reverse cooling, block torque plates, leak down testers, crossbolts mains, tube headers, and I'm sure many more inovations introduced into racing. he was a pilot in WW2 and used his knowledge of aircraft in racing cars.

Unfortunately, it's true. I heard during the Winston Cup Race. Old Legends never die. Long live the knowledge of Smokey!!!!
