How can I get a Title for a 58 Chevy?

I bought a 58 2dr yeoman wagon from an out of business junkyard for next to nothing, knowing full well I'd have to come up with a title someday. I have'nt checked with the State of Mo. yet, and quite frankly, don't want to 'till I have my ducks in a row. I also have'nt contacted any of the Ads in the magazines yet that advertise titles, are they legit?. Thought I'd try and get some advice from any of you that have gone through this sort of thing. I am able to get a bill of sale from the old man I bought it from if needbe. Any suggestions?

contact your DMV to find out what you need. you don't have to tell them who you are. but better to get the straight scoop then know what other states need and not know yours for sure. bill of sale should certainly help, could possibly be all you need.

How 'bout that? My 2dr came from Oklahoma with a salvage title back in '88, which means it was supposed to be crushed. I contacted one of the ads in a magazine from Alabama. Their corporation 'bought' my car for whatever price I gave them. They did a background check on the car to make sure it wasn't stolen, got the needed paperwork for the car in their state, then sold it back to me for 'my price' plus about $150 fee. I took their paperwork to the secretary of state's office and applied for a title transfer.

Back when I worked on VW's, I bought a VW from a woman whose husband had died (he worked on them). She didn't have the title, but knew who it belonged to. I called them to no avail. I applied to the state for a lost title. State told me that that person could come and claim the car if they wanted...but, then, that too was about 15 years ago...in Illinois. Hope this helps you.

I had all my paper work ready to register my sled right down to the paper work for appling for a title (had no title or previous reg. since car came out of a barn in many pieces)Registry said i needed a title or a previous reg. to register it. Threw all my papers away and got a registration for a 57 studebaker from a fella in Md. The papers he sent went right through the registry like gas through a 454 with no problem. Good luck!

In NY they did not issue a title for any car prior to 1972. All you would need is a bill of sale. Find out the rules in your state. Get someone to sell you the car for a dollar from a state that has no titles on that year. Then just go to your DMV and register it. In NY all we get on an old car prior to '72 is a transferable reg. Lance,
You can approach this situation in many ways, but I agree with the comment that every state is different. First, find out what your state requires. I know in MD and PA you can pay for a title search, if you have a VIN. This is a roundabout way to prove where the car came from. Some states will issue reconstructed titles. It is a legal, valid registration, it just says reconstructed on it. Some people shy away from this. In PA, it's just a letter in the code box, no sweat. Then, there are the title recyclers. I never dealt with any, but, I know in PA it IS ILLEGAL to sell them. I saw undercover cops bust people at Carlisle one year for selling titles.
