Building a 32' Hi-boy: Every 32'I see has a very steep steering column angle. I know about missing that left header and other space problems but is space the only reason or am I missing something? Thanks!! pJ

I am building a 32 Tudor and juast got done remounting my column. I started out with it very close to vertical, because I saw several cars with it that way. I am using a T-56 6 speed trans, so it got really crowded near the pedals. Since then I have seen more '32s with the column coming out of the vertical surface of the firewall making it reach into the car more. I mounted my seats and tried everthing out and decided to move mine so that the bottom comes out higher. This gave me more pedal room and actually fits better about an inch below the header, yet above the oil sender on my LT-1 (which really sticks out far).
I am convinced that this is the best place for the bottom of the column. I am using a 6 1/2" drop with an "IDIDIT" tilt column.
Unfortunately I just got done taking everything apart again, so I don't have the motor or the body on the frame right now. I would be glad to send a picture of where it comes out of the firewall if you want.

Thanks 32'TUDOR, Sounds like a good plan. Condsider this: Use a front wheel drive cloumn (like late Grand Prix)or double universal to break the 30 degree barrier. Shorten the column so that the down break is INSIDE. The column would then be at even a lessor angle and not penetrate the firewall but would be supported by it. Yes, this would take a supported down shaft and another double universal (supported)and also look odd but the angle would be close to modern specs. My car will be a mix of nostalgia/salt flats racer with as many modern adminities as possible. Thanks again! pJ

Go into the articles section listed on the tabs above and read the Steering column installation article by Dick. It gives you maximum recommended angles and all sort of good advice to ensure a good steering column installation. It is a great step by step procedure. Good Luck...

Parke, there are several things to take into consideration,
What type of column,Steering box or Rack, Are you
going to change the dash,or modify it, and also
is your car a rdstr. or coupe makes a difference
if it's a coupe there's a package tray that you
can remove. And what type of seat are you using.
Last but not least if you are close to 6ft tall and your car is chopped that column might have to go further
back so you can get in the car.
Theres a lot of things to think about
GOOD LUCK, "WHEELS"

Hey Guys my 3w cpe hi boy flat non recessed firewall. The 32" long column comes through the firewall 6" from top of frame , 40degree angle, sticks out into engine bay 2". Remember I have a flat firewall, also 5 speed [clutch pedal] hope this helps.

Hello Ezondis
This the most important thing in building the car and everyone has a different way of doing this. My way is to put in a seat or mock up a seat and put the columb where it fits you and the look is that the steering wheel isnt over the top of the dash.
