Rearend swap for 51 Chevy

I recently traded for a 51 Chevy 2dr. Still has the 216 and 3 spd. Here's the problem the rear gears are real low. 55 mph is winding the engine pretty tight. So I'm looking at a rear axle swap. Anyone here ever done this with a 10 bolt? What car would be a good donor? I could probably look this up myself, but I'm lazy today. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You can get a little higher gears by useing a chevy rear axle out of '51 to '54 powerglide car. I think 3.55, the stock ratio on a 3 speed is 4.11. The 216 will have a hard time with anything higher. The 1969 to about 1977 Nova, camaro, firebird 10 bolts are the proper with. But they are open drive. So if you use a late model rear axle you will have to change the transmission and driveshaft. If you deciede to go ahead with this swap let me know,I have done this a few times. You can buy highway gears for your original rear axle, From Patrick's trucks, 520-836-1117. Hope this helps, HonestFrank
