You can get a little higher gears by useing a chevy rear axle out of '51 to '54 powerglide car. I think 3.55, the stock ratio on a 3 speed is 4.11. The 216 will have a hard time with anything higher. The 1969 to about 1977 Nova,camaro,firebird 10 bolts are the proper with. But they are open drive. So if you use a late model rear axle you will have to change the transmission and driveshaft.
