Steering box blocking exhaust?
by 41 Chevy

I have been told by RB's and another rod shop that If I wanted to just put a small block in my '41 Chevy and upgrade the front brakes without doing a new crossmember that the steering box in the car now would be in the way of the new exhaust, What do you think? Alan

Thats a pretty wide open statement, what kind of exhaust, ie: 4 into 1 headers, block hugger headers, stock manifolds, stock cast rams horn, ect. I find it hard to believe that one of the above would not work with your stock steering. I have never done a conversion with stock steering, all I have seen or worked on had either a sub frame, or a mustang II kit.

I'd take a look at Sanderson Headers web site, www.sandersonheader.com or give them a call, 1-800-669-2430. They helped me with stock steering in a 46 Ford.

I had a '41 Pontiac coupe with a small block and SBC. Had a set of ram's horn manifolds and no steering box problems. This car had at one time an Olds engine with no problems. The only difference between my Pont and a chev was about 7" from cowl to front bumper.

Hi Alan, I answered this question for you once before. Not to many years ago this was a common problem. Before all these "kits" were available. I can't remember what exact exhaust manifold works. If you can find one try '55,'56 Chevy car left side exhaust exit's in front. Try '73 chevy truck left side, goes under spark plugs, you may have to cut off exhaust outlet and move it forward about 2" weld it back on. If your worried about welding cast iron, Just look in local paper or phone book. Steam fitters all weld cast iron. It's in the welding rod. Much cheeper and faster then a crossmember. You Can Do It.
