The Size of my Cam, regardless what they say

Oh Great Gurus!!! I am now questioning my original thinking for my 35. I am wondering if This is too much cam????

I am running 3:73 gears in the Narrowed Lincoln 8.8 rear. M/T 28X18.5s on 15x14 rims. C-4 Tranny(currently stock converter, will go to 2400 stall soon as mmore cash flows) The engine is a 302 with flat pistions and I think will need to have .10 shaved off the heads, probably about 9:1 compression, maybe teeny less. I have a Eledbrock Torker(the discontinued one with the twisted carb mounting flange) and an Eldebrock 600cfm vaccum secondarys, elec choke.

I WANT a super mean sounding cam, but I want decent driving abilities, ie. for cruzing and daily driving and idle at stop lights. I also want, errrrrr, need to have enough low end torque to cook my tires. Is Crane Cams 512 lift with about 280 duration too much???? I havent ordered the cam yet, and when I do, I plan on getting the kit that has the lifters and valve springs together. Do I need to go with a smaller lift, or a smaller duration, or both?? I really have to be able to drive it all the time and be happy with it. Thank you for your opnions. -D

I think the smartest guys would say talk to the cam grinders. Tell them what you have, what you want and let them make a suggestion on cam choice.

A real good site on picking a cam is amotiom.com. (Accelerated Motion) They have a numbering system that will tell how your cam will perform and what kind of equipment it needs to go with it (What gears, size of carb, headers etc.). You might have to match up the cam you want to one that is similar to see what it needs. Try it it works. They have hundreds of cam specs.

I run a 292H comp cam, 244 @ 050, with 507 lift, 3000 rpm stall with 29" tires.
If your worried about the sound watch the lobe seperation angle, a 114 will change the characteristics of the cam and make it milder. I have a 110 and it has a really nasty idle.
