Say guys (and gals), I'm installing a Vintage Air COMPAC GEN II air conditioning unit under the dash of my '32. Anyone have any opinions on the best location for bringing the refrigerant and heater hoses through the firewall.

Dick; Mine come through the fire wall on the passenger side about 7" down from the hood and about 3" in from the side. The hoses are straped to the radiator brace. Looks neat and out of the way. I haven't gotten my bio on line yet but I'm working on it . Peggy Sue is my wifes 57 T Bird and my ride is a Downs 32 roadster . I was talking about the air on the roadster . Hope this helps. R P

Hi Dick. got mine mounted about 1 ft below the hood and about 3 inches inboard from the side. But i got a hood and sides. I have seen a coupe like yours open hood, and he had his running down the side if the radiator, then along the side of the frame, then up at thru the floorboard. (where the friewall and floorboard meet).
Hope this helps

Very helpful guys. I just positioned the unit and a very large portion it is going to hang down below the dash and be visable. If I went higher my gauges would interfear with the unit. Bringing the hoses in from below the unit will make them visable also...but I guess I have no other option. Things are really tight!

Dick, You can always put a 3" drop on the bottom of the dash. also have it set back alittle. That's what i did on my 34. and put the vents on the 3" drop.

I didn't run my A/C lines through the fire wall.I made a false fire wall inside and used that for a chase for all the lines. They all come up under the truck...Ray

TO: DICK Z. IN MY '33 COUPE, IT IS ALSO VERY TIGHT UNDER THE DASH. I HAVE NO GAUGES ON THE PASSENGER SIDE SO I DID NOT HAVE THE SAME CONCERN THAT YOU HAVE WITH INTERFEARANCE. I RAN THE HOSES FROM THE COMPRESSOR DOWN AND OUT TO THE INSIDE OF THE FRAME RAIL THAN BACK TOWARD THE FIREWALL. BROUGHT THEM UP THRU THE FLOORBOARDS LOW IN THE CORNER AND MOUNTED THE AIR DRYER DOWN LOW IN FRONT OF THE FLOOR-FIREWALL. THIS WAS DONE TO NOT DISTURB THE AREA FOR THE PASSENGERS FOOT ROOM. WITH THE HOOD SIDES OFF OF THE CAR YOU ALMOST CAN'T SEE THE HOSES. MAKE FOR A VERY CLEAN INSTALLATION AND THERE IS NO "HUMP" IN THE CORNER ON THE PASSENGER SIDE (INSIDE THE CAR). ARE YOU USING THE 134R SYSTEM ? THIS IS A HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM AND YOU MUST MAKE SURE ALL YOUR HOSES ARE WELL CLAMPED AND USE THE O-RING SEALS. DURING A HOT SPELL I CANNOT RUN THE A-C FULL ON OR IT WILL FREEZE YOUR NOSE OFF ! I USED THE SAME UNIT YOU HAVE. TO THIS POINT I HAVE NOT HAD ANY LEAKS AND I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THE COOLING POWER AND OPERATION OF THIS UNIT. GOOD LUCK !

Yes, I want to mount my A/C unit behind the seat in my '34 Chevy 5 window coupe. Hopefully i can run all my hoses under the body alone the frame on the right side. I think this is the way to go. HonestFrank

Thanks again everyone for all the help. I'll keep you posted on my progress and include some pics that may help others. Yes, I am using 134R. And I will use the 3" drop dash idea. It will contain the center air duct and the controls. I'm already commited to sticking it under the dash.
