My brother has a 57 Chev. Small window pickup..the rear end was bad and he took it out and went to a junkyard and they sold him another one, saying that it was out of a 75 Riviera...when he went to put brakes on this rearend, they were too short..The number on the top of the axle housing is E071..My friend tells me he thinks this is a 71 Camero or Firebird...alas, those brake, while simular, are too short as well...anybody got any ideas what this rear end is??

I'm Sorry but there is just not enough information to I.D. your new rear axle. The rear axle you want to use is 1975 to '79 carmaro, firebird, may be Nova. If you still have the pick up rear axle measure it from face of brake drum to face of brake drum (face of drum is where the wheel bolts on) around 62" Give me this measurement and i'll tell you what rear axle will fit. Hope this helps, HonestFrank

Appreciate your offer to help...my brother now tells me that the rearend ended up being out of a 71-75 Buick Electra Stationwagon (of all things)..at any rate, he certainly will have some road gears back there...thanks again for the offer...

Do wop, take your old shoes to a reputable parts store (not one of those retailers) and look at thier picture book. I used to sell Wagner brakes at my store. Wagner had a book available that had drawings of every shoe they made, and the pictures were arranged progressively by drum diameter and then by width. Every hole in the web of the shoe is also pictured. Once you find out the correct part number for your shoes, you can look in the buyer's guide to find out what years and makes vehicles the shoes fit. You may not pin it to an exact year and make, but you'll at least have an approximation.

Thanks for that information...I'm pretty sure my brother pinned his search on one of the generic "parts stores" like Kragen or Pep boys...at any rate, he's finally found out that that rear end came out of a Buick Station Wagon..71-75
...on that same note, any idea what the gear ratio would be in that rearend??..he's going to be hooking it to his 350 turbo with some substantial rear meat...just curious about what kind of legs that will give that old truck...
