restore a 1966 thunderbird w/428

I just bought a 1966 tbird the serial# tells me it came stock with a 428.
The question is where are all the 428's I just don't seem to be able to find much out about this motor. I have always worked with the sm. chev so this is uncharted territory for me and I was hoping there are some ford lovers in the group that can get me started in the right direction.

It's an FE series bigblock, same engine family as the 352/260/390/427. Very torquey motors, but they don't like being wound real tight. You can't wind them up like a bigblock Chevy, but built properly they'll pull like a locomotive.

appreciate your input, having no experience with fords other than a couple of friends in the 60's with 289 sprints they moved real good but they were not big blocks so I am just looking for advice. Thanks agaqin

Hi Dr. Pepper
The 428'S are out there will just take a little hunting. If you don't care about numbers matching the 390 FE engine looks exactly the same and will move that T- Bird like a scaided Dog. I could find a 428 for you but i'm in North Carolina. Is that to far? HonestFrank

there are lots of rebuild parts around for the 428's, some of the parts catalogs don't list them. all they list are 360- 390, etc., so you might have to inquire with them about parts for them specifically. i have a 428 p.i. that i had redone a few years back, bored, balanced and redone from the ground up, i put it in my 4x4 pickup. it pulls hard from 1500 to 5000 rpms. someday i'll have to put it in the "right" kind of ride, to do it real justice.
