Hi Tool, I have 3" of room under my front fenders, ( splash apron, but there part of the fenders). Anyway i've had no problems so far. ( knock on wood). The front fenders are the lowest part of my car.
I can massure my front cross members for you if you want. but it's higher than my fenders.

I'd be more concerned with clearance at the tranny mount, but you should be ok. I've only got 2 3/4" at my tranny mount on my A and I haven't had any problems. Just careful with speedbumps.

If it doesn't drag occasionally, chances are it isn't low enough!

LOL Bob,
Yep good point.
I had an old timer tell me once that the only time you need to be worried is when it drags. Like when you get a flat on the front.
Will the oil pan take abuse and hurt something if you get a flat on the front?

The way to tell if anything will drag if you have a flat tire is to stretch a string from the bottom of each rim to the point where each of the other tires touch the ground. Thats called your scrub line. If anything is below that line it will drag if you have a flat and can cause you to lose control.

I checked my truck 3 years ago and found that the ends of the u-bolts for the rear leaf springs were hanging below that line so I cut them off. Last summer I had a blow out on a rear tire and if I hadn't cut those u-bolts off they probably would have caught on the road and who knows what would have happened. As it turned out, I was able to keep it under control.

I occasionally scrape, and to be honest, while it looks cool, it's stressful to drive. If you live in an area of rough roadways, you have to REALLY CONCENTRATE on the raod in front of you. The point made about the scrub line is right on. My problem lies with the grille shell and front of the fenders. That'a where I scrape. I never scrape my crossmember, because the wheels lift it over bumps. For example on a speedbump, your wheels will hit the speedbump simultaneously as the cross member, and , therefor will not bottom out. Remember to take bumps at an angle, and watch out for the crown of the road. (When the middle of the road is higher than where your wheels are traveling)

Hey, Kirk, Where can I get wheels and tires that fit like that ? Does the car undulate up and down as it moves down the highway ?

Nothing more humiliating than running over you own knocked off parts. Watch the speedbumps, manhole covers and potholes. Life can get embarassing pickin your oil pump outta the road.

Shaved it in Charlotte........blksheep

The first question is... are you gonna drive this or trailer it?!! I have had everything from insanely low to moderately low. you must NEVER violate the "scrub line" while at driving height!! bent grilles and crossmembers can be fixed, but there is only 1 you!!! I say if everything wolld have clearance on flat tires, drive it and be the talk of the show!!! a tip for you, if it's really low, it sometimes helps to approach an obsticale from an angle(such as driveway approaches or speed bumps)if you get tired of repainting the crossmember scratches fab up a skid plate that bolts on to take the abuse!!!(I had one on my 39 ford lower grille with a craftsman tool chest wheel in it to ride over the bumps)
