Whoooeeee

I spent this weekend messin' with the engine setup in my coupe. It had some stumbles on acceleration and a high speed miss. It's a ZZ4 crate unit. My son-in-law knows Holleys real well, so he went thru it making some adjustments. I worked on the ignition. I found a plug wire with an end burned away. Also found I had to make a spacer to fit under the gas pedal mount, it would't get but 60% throttle. I corrected the timing then took a drive. Whoooeee!!! I gotta have picked up 50 horsepower! The car will now smoke the 31" tall tires all the way thru 1st, solidly thru 2nd, a good solid chirp in 3rd. It continued to pull strongly in fourth til I let off about 100. Man, is it fun!!! Just had ta tell ya all.

I was reading somewhere on the web that the ZZ4's were over rated. I don't believe it for a minute! (I think they're jealous) If they're working right....hang on. I've got a ZZ3 in my truck that I modified a little and I couldn't be happier with it. Its strong and still gets good mileage (15-20mpg) and the truck weighs 3300 lbs. Good to hear yours is back to normal. I'll bet with a 4 speed and a 'glass body it DOES put a big grin on your face.

This past Saturday, I hit the local cruise nite. There was an absolutely beautiful, freshly built, 55 Chevrolet 2 door post parked next to me. I got talkin' with the owner, he has a ZZ4 engine in it,too. He said that he had run it at the drags recently. Through the exhaust, with B F G's soft compound radial street/drag tires, he went a 12.80 ! A buddy of mine that has a full fendered 33 Ford Roadster. ZZ4, 700R4, and 3.89's has gone 12.40's (with slicks, closed exhaust). Seems to me, the ZZ series of engines DO run strongly.

I ran a zz3 in my '64 Corvette for 3 years with an Edelbrock 650. Absolutely great! I replaced it with a zz 430 (this things a jet) and the zz3 is on a stand waiting to go into a Chevelle my son and I are planning. Best $3100 I ever spent. Glad to hear you're out and running, the silly season is here in Wisconsin too.
