I just had a local electrical shop put a truck 6 volt battery in my 53 Desoto, the eight volt I had was scaring me...they say it will give me 900 cold cranking amps. They also put a new regulator in and set it at around 7 volts.
my question is, they say that the starter is imposing too much draw on the system and that I'll likely need to replace it or have the old one rebuilt...if that is the part of the problem, what would cause the draw? and do Desoto hemi's starters act like Chevy's and have a heat sink problem?...

DW.....I don't fully understand the reason that you switched. The 6 volt battery will cause the starter to draw more current (since it's a constant wattage device) from the battery. This means that the connections and wiring will be more taxed to come thru with the increase in current.
Also, the Chevy starters heat soak and actually restrict current coming to the starter windings and therefore less wattage available to turn the pile...so to speak. So, if it heat soaks.....that's less current that it takes.
The Hemi starters are kinda an enigma to me. You will have to root out Skip for this question....he has the experience and knowledge here that will help I am sure. His email is skip.readio@compaq.com

Hi Do Wop,
I'll look today I have a lot of NOS and rebuilt 6 volt starters, hopfully i have one for your Desoto. If your Starter solonoid is mounted on top of your starter motor, i would say yes it could suffer from heat sink. Remember a good ground is VERY Important for a 6 volt system. Talk to you later.
