I am in the process of upgrading my ignition system on my small block Chevy, currently an old Accel distributor w/Petronix Ignitor and an old Accel Super Stock coil. I have purchased a MSD Ready to Run Pro Billet distributor and a MSD Ignition Control Box 6A. I was told to not believe the hype of the Blaster 2 coil and other aftermarket coils and instead get a plain ol' Delco coil. Whaddya think?

For Street and Strip: High energy coil designed especially for optimum performance with Mallory UNILITE Ignition, Magnetic Breakerless Ignition, Electronic Advance Computer and one of the HYFIRE Series of Electronic Ignition Controls. Also, it is an excellent choice for breaker points and original equipment breakerless electronic systems. This coil has an effective RPM range up to 6,500 RPM when used with breaker points or a breakerless electronic system. When used with Mallory HYFIRE Electronic Ignition Controls or other, this coil will operate effectively up to 8,000 RPM.

Raz What did you not like about the accel w/pertronix ignitor?(No failure yet) I do know it would be wise to keep a spare 6a control box around if you travel any distance. They dont like heat ,vibration, voltage spikes kill them. Also make sure you disconnect the unit when weldin on the car or even using a batt charger. The MSD unit is not very forgiving,i have had them fail in race cars(were they work well when they work) and street cars. This is not a post were my friend had this and he says that,i have had many fail. Most guys racin will run 2 boxes with a switch over . This is not a blast on MSD products i use there HEI,s all the time with only 2 failures. For the street you wont see any diff in a high buck coil.Just buy a good one(no k-mart specials) Go with the KISS factor(Keep It Simple Stupid) and it will never steer yah wrong. In the end the ignition is only as good as the plug wires and the voltage supplied to it.

Hello 37Nash:
The problem with the Accel distributor was basically, it was just worn out! I guess every product has their "dark side", and I appreciate your input, but the MSD 6A box came highly recommended by a fellow street rodder who swore by them and said he has never had a problem with his unit. If the box should fail on me, I will simply go to the "KISS" principle and do the three wire hook-up from the distributor.
Thanks for your input, as well as yours Al. I would still like the comments and suggestions to continue.
This Rountable is GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unless you are going to do something fancy-smancy like a rev limiter etc.......the GM HEI with the hi performance modules and coils are as good as it gets to 7500, and dirt cheap compared to all that other hardware. I have never had one go bad on me....ever. The pure stock ones on the dynos show no significant changes in hp or torqe for motors under 11 to 1 CR and 6000rpm. There was just an article somewhere on this of late.....same results basically.
I like the Pertronix with their coil when room is an issue. No failures there either.
Just my 2 sense.

raz, stay away from the accel stuff. i used them in both my monster show truck and 67 el-camino..there junk as far as i`m concerned..i switched to msd blaster coil and never had an ounce of trouble from them..mallory is also a good product..i would stick to all 1 set up..if you use a coil from mallory msd and a holley dist. for example then if and when something goes wrong and you call the manufacturer then they`ll blame the other stuff..happen to me twice..oh well i`m done now...good luck....pat

I've had 2 MSD 6AL boxes go south on me and the guy I sold my replacement (third one, brand new, never installed when I sold it) to had it go south on him, as well. Mine was a replacement for his failed original. He lost one more (a total of 3) before he got one that ran dependably.
'Nother friend lost his on the interstate heading into Salt Lake City. One minute he was behind us, the next he was gone. He'd already pulled the electronic (MSD) distributor out and replaced it w/ a point distributor a year or so prior and now he's running stock ignition (small block Chev)
I wouldn't recommend MDS to anyone.
