Panels to fill a roof????

I have recently purchased a very nice old 35 Ford 2dr Flatback Sedan.Am considering this as a streetrod candidate. If I decide to build this car filling the top is a must for me.Awhile back there was an article in one of the mags,Streetrodder I think, about a fellow who started a company thay made panels to fill the roofs of several cars.I have searched the bone yards and found compatible roofs from donor cars in the past but am getting waaaaay to old for that!!Have looked thru the back issues that I have but am missing many since we moved into our new home.Any help regarding this situation will be appreciated.THANKS!!!See Ya!!

Hi Daryle, I don't know about a company making roof "Filler" panels. If you make a pattern out of mycarda (hard board) 4x8 sheet of 1/4" is cheep at any discount hardware store. This is also great material for your work bench top. I start with making a cardboard pattern of the roof radius from side to side. Once I have this made I transfer to the hardboard. Then you can go to the bone yard or to a sheet metal shop. The shop can just roll the radius you need on a sheet of 18 0r 20 Gauge steel,(using your pattern). If you want ribs go to the bone yard and look at older vans. I am doing a 1936 Plymouth 2 dr. coach with flat sheet metal in the opening, then I'm going to install the soft roof material on top of the steel in its original location. Finding your roof filler is easy, Installing it so it looks right is another story. Regards, HonestFrank

If you like the looks of ribs, I put a top from a Chevy blazer in my 36 Ford slantback. Really looks cool. It only cost $50.00 from a salvage yard.Think it was a 85 s-10 model.

I used one of the pannels that you are refering to. I will get the name and address of the guy who makes them. It's out at the shop, I won't be going there for a few days. The one I did was a 35 coupe. The fit was perfect, so was the crown, in all directions. I highly recomend these pannels. I see so many filled roofs that are just not quite "right". The 35 I did looks like it never had a hole. Was well worth the 300.00

Thanks Eric, will look forward to your reply.I agree, most of the tops that I've seen filled looked a little off either in the side to side radius or the front to rear.I'm sure it's pretty difficult to get both correct. The 35 has exactly the same opening as a 36,do you know if it's available smooth only or ribbed also?May have to impose on you with a question or two if I attempt this myself!!Hope the new job is going great,I'm sure it's quite a change!!See Ya!!

Daryle, they are smooth only. Feel free to ask advice. It's a substantial job, but it's easier with a pannel that has the right contures to start with. That alone justifies the cost. I felt like the labor savings paid for the part and then some. I'll write myself a note to call out to the shop and get the info asap. Eric.

I built 2 35 slantbacks in the last year and used a 70 chevelle 4 dr top section the first time and a 70 Tempest 4 door top section on this one. Contour is very good both directions.

Hi Vic,Thanks for the info.If I don't find an aftermarket panel,I'll hit the salvage yards.Very nice looking 35!!I am just finishing a 37 Flatback but think the 35 has better lines!Found this car in a small town, very pristine condition, owned by this fellow for 50 years. It's a car that begs to be built as a retro-rod,It's a Standard, just wondering what became of the tailight stands, horns, bumpers etc from your car??Drop me an e-mail if any of this stuff is still around, also would love to see some additional photos of your 35's.Also,what did you do for a hood on your other 35,I see this one has no hood??This is in referance to an additional post on the roundtable.See Ya!!

Daryle, Walden speed shop is where the owner of the 35 I did got his pannel. It was 300.00 for the coupe. Give them a call at (806)274-4026, and find out cost and avaliability for your sedan. Let me know what you find out. I'll look for the mag with the artical. I can scan it and email it to you if you want. Eric.

Hi Eric,Thanks for the info.I gave them a call, the fella I spoke with was very helpfull, however the price of a sedan top delivered to me is $900.00.He explained that he has to build it in two pieces and then hammer/weld it together. He says he can build 4 coupe tops in the time it takes to do 1 sedan, hence the high cost. The article I'm looking for is in the March issue of Streetrod Builder, will see if I can locate it and make my decision from there.I can get a donor top for $50.00,don't know if it would save $850.00 worth of labor??Again, thanks to all the fellas that responded and I still may bother you with a question or two even if I use the Donor top!!See Ya!!

One place to check for roof panels is a van conversion shop, they cut the tops off when they put the raised roof sections on, then they usually throw them out back to rot.
Usually cheap or free.
