i now need some more advice on my hi po 350.the motor has a fairly wild cam(290 duration,465 lift,230 duration at .050,106 degrees lobe centers)11.0 compression,2.02 early vette heads, low rise eldebrock 2-four intake with 2 600 a.f.b(i already had the 600s,so i am trying to use them instead of buying new 500s)the motor has very unstable vacumm at idle and is running rich at idle.i think the metering rods are jumping up and down and letting more gas in at idle-would a step up spring change to a lower number(inches of vacumm)help this.also would it hurt to rejet the 600s more in line with what the 500s come with ...any experience with this kind of problem out there.

These carbs are pretty easy to tinker with. Get 2 Carter or Edelbrock strip kits (assortment of rods and jets). You can switch to larger and larger rods to get leaner. If you need to you can go to smaller jets and then keep stepping the rods up again until you get it where you need it. Also check the metering rod springs. The rods are held down by vacuum at idle, and raise out of the jets as the vacuum drops. A stiffer rod spring will cause the rods to raise quicker and vice versa.
The only trouble I ever had with these carbs was flooding on hard braking. Be sure your float level is low enough to prevent the flooding.
I'm no expert, but these things helped on the carbs I've owned.

There's a world of difference between "good" and "good enough".

I run Edelbrock 750's on my BB496 blower motor and a bigger cam on the street and although it took me a couple of weeks to dial them in, them have been excellent ever since....They have a guy on their tech line named Smitty that helped me alot...give a call or email him. I am running 3/4 turn idle, accel pump on the top hole, 120 primary with .070 x .046 with silver springs and 130 secondaries......it will be rich for you but try turning the idle screws down as low as you can. I bought the strip kits but only used a few peices from it so I would call Smitty before you buy anything

thanks for the info baddog..496,i have called edelbrock tech, but i dont know who i talked to.they didnt really want to help me cause i have carter a.f.b.s and not theirs.this guy claimed they are very different on the inside, but that is not what carter carbs told me. by the way, my carbs also have silver springs..do you know if these are stiffer or lighter than the #5(orange) springs?thanks,

Sorry this took so long...was out of town
Smitty is the only one that really seems to know....be creative and tell him they are Edelbrocks. I guess the 500 series carbs could be different but I know the 750 and 600 are exactly the same no matter what they tell you, cause it can not be much of a difference.
Plain spring are 8", pink 7", Orange 5", Yellow 4" and Blue 3" . Edelbrock has a good manual you can print from the net..have a look

thanks bad dog for the reply....i ordered to spring kits and changed to the weakest(blue) springs. that solved the problem with the metering rods bouncing. i will fine tune the rods and jets when i get it on the road.at least it doesnt run as rich at idle now. i may have to go to a cam with 110 to 114 lobe centers to really make it right. the 106 degrees i have now is a little much..it really cackels thru the lakes style headers though......real hot rods are noisy.

Glad it is strating to work for you....I just started out by setting the screw for max rpm then idle speed. Make sure you are in the top hole of the pump arm. then get the main right and leave the main and rod till last. They atke alittle longer...use the graph that they have posted on the web....it shows you the combinations of rods and jets by area so you can get it just right
