Woodward Ave Dream Cruise

I attended the Woodward Ave Dream Cruise yesterday. If you haven't experienced this event, you haven't lived!! Just ask Denise! She seems to know everyone!
The estimates were in the neighborhood of 30,000 rods/classics/muscle cars/special interest/you name it vehicles. The spectator attendance is well over 1 million
One of the best parts is seeing the Big 3 drive their concept cars up and down Woodward Ave. Very cool.
Be sure to get to Woodward Ave next year!!

Yep Daryle, to much fun was had by all, if thats possible!!?? I wasn't sure if anyone was following my posts cuz no one made any comments and I really didn't want to shove our great times on Woodward down anyones throat. I guess I should have just you guys asked if you were reading them. I'll finish up here then.

Thursday was kind of cloudy and a few sprinkles every now and then. There were still thousands of cars out there and a ton of people sitting in chairs with umbrallas. Didn't close Duggans cuz I knew I needed a decent night sleep but it killed me to have to leave Woodward while there was still action going on.

Friday morning I headed down bright and early but not early enough. Everything was in full swing. Cruised the whole 17 miles north and back then did the 500 car parade in Berkley. Had a quick din din then hooked up with Big Al's buddys from Canada. Me and the girls proceded to cruz with them and when the cops closed Woodward we made our way to Duggans. Closed Duggans again and everyone caravaned to my place and crashed. Its now after 2am and the guys are getting up at 5am to get great spots(which they did). I choose to sleep in alittle. I already had my spot planned and I knew my club brothers would guard it with their lives.

Sat morning I left the house at 8am and cruzed 8 Mile road to get to Woodward. A Yanko 427 Impala convert caught a light with me. Without even looking at each other, when the light turned green we were off. The lights are spread about a mile apart at this point. I'm slowly pulling away from him and by the time we hit about 1/2 mile I'm almost a car lenght ahead!! What a rush! Neither one of us are backing down. The light ahead turns red. We both stopped without locking them up, but he went about half way into the intersection. (No one was coming). At the light I turned and looked at him, and his wife, who was in the passenger seat, shot me a very dirty look. Probley cuz I was grinning from ear to ear!! LOL My boyfriend was in his 77 Vette behind us and said we had to have hit 100 but he wasn't able to keep up with us and I forgot to look at the speedo. It felt great, I hadn't opened her up like that in years. Anyway, made it to Woodward without to much trouble. Cruised in bumper to bumper traffic for about 5 hours stopping every so often when I saw some buddies. Had no problems finding spots to park the Vette when I wanted to talk to someone. Hooked up with Al and his Canadian buds for awhile. Finally parked about 2pm with my car club in Birmingham, had a spot right on Woodward. Spent the rest of the day in a lawn chair watching the action. Around 9pm the police started shutting it down. Shortly after this it started to rain which helped dispurse the people. Was home by 11pm wiped out from 6 days/nights in a row on Woodward.

It's tough to put into words what an awesome time it is. For me it's the highlight of the summer. It is getting alittle out of hand with all the corporate stuff. Ford, GM, Dodge, Chevy, Eaton, etc are all taking up massive amounts of space. Its leaving the true car people scrambling for parking. People are starting to leave their cars in their "spaces" over night. I know for a fact that Ford Motor Company paid $75,000 for the use of the Shane park area in downtown Birmingham. Thats not counting the bill that they will receive for the damages to anything. I would imagine that Eaton paided a similair amount for Pioneer Park. The Michigan Hot Rod Assoc got kicked out of the shopping center at 13 Mile, which they had been in for years, paying of course, in lieu of Dodge! The "little" guys, who started the cruise to begin with, are all getting pushed aside. But, in the long run, it's all still worth it. A better time with your hot rod can not be found anywhere!!! Anyone who wants to come next year, and needs a place to crash, is more then welcome at my place.

I'm on my way tomorrow to hook up with Hot Rod Liz and the Lipstick Tour girls for a few days Chicago before heading on to E'ville, IN for the Frog Follies. I guess she has planned some visits to a few hot rod shops in the area. I'll report back here next week with any "hot" details or I think your going to be able to read about our adventures in Streetscene Mag.

Hey Al, You've got some great buddies!! Me and the girls really enjoyed their company. We've got to do it again real soon. I think the girls are finally realizing what an awesome time they can have with hot rods and car people. THANKS
