In early April, I will be driving a topless deuce roadster from Florida to my home near Toronto. The key word here is topless!
Any words of wisdom from the topless veterans out there as to how to prepare and dress? No jokes about brass monkeys please!
Thanks!

Al
We have left Columbia S.C. in 28 degree weather in a rodster no top , make sure you cover your head, feet and hands and also found that if you open the cover where the master cyclinder is you can get some heat from there. If you are comming up 95 and cut thought South Carolina stop and i will give you something warm to eat and drink. Thanks for the tips!
Yes, I will be coming up 95. At this point I plan in leaving Sarasota on April 1. Not sure how long it will take to get to South Carolina. Do you have any guesses.
My plan is to drive 12 hours each day.........try to stay in the sun.

Burr! Do you know anyone with 1 of those seat covers that plugs into cig lighters? I use 1 in the bucket.(a gift) It doesn't provide much heat, but sure takes the chill off the vinyl seat in the rump area...1 other thing. Besides your concern for clothing - be Xtra cautious about the loons on the road, rubber necking you & not watching the road. I'm out tomorrow in mine, top is in 4 repairs so the snow in the face will B brutal.

And how bout those snap packs, that you slap and they warm up for a few hours - sold at sporting goods places I think. A few down your shirt, 1 in each mitt. Long Johns are a great investment too - always wear layers, and put on too much - that way you can peel off layers if its too warm.. Hey, I carry clothing for 3 seasons in the bucket & change 3 times a day damm near....I've needed it all too often. Also, some bikers have heated suits/vests - know any serious bikers? I missed buying a heated suit by 1 month.

It might sound crazy but why not wear a helment. I wear a silk face mask (very warm) and helment when I'm riding my snowmobile going 50-60mph and I don't feel the wind. I would actually wear a whole snowmobile get up if I was you. Bibs, jacket, heavy duty wool socks and mittens not gloves. Your fingers keep each other warm. I actually have what's called liners for my socks and mittens. They are kind of silvery material that reflects the heat inside the mittens and socks. Take a trip to your local snowmobile shop and check out what they have to offer. I'd offer you my stuff to use but most of its up north in Gaylord with my machine. (which I didn't get a chance to ride at all this year!) Good luck!! :)
Did you ship the 37 down to him? Who did you use and is the new owner happy with their service?

Hey Denise..........good suggestions. Maybe I'll wear silk panty hose too. Wouldn't that be a sight!
The '37 hasn't been shipped yet. The new owner (friend of a friend) is having the interior finished up here by Wayne Edwards. He does incredible work.........with Canadian dollars you can't go wrong.
I called several car transporters. They ranged in price from $1200 to $2500. I figured using my airline miles and having only to buy fuel, I couldn't go wrong by driving it home.

Big Al, I don't know what kinda run you're going to make, flat out or leisurely, but if it's leisurely I'd run I-75 up to about exit 71 or 72 (just above Ocala) and cut over to US-301. It's 4 lane to I-10 west of Jacksonville and mostly 65mph. Lots more interesting than Interstate all the way. Cut across I-10 to the I-295 bypass around Jax, pick up I-95 to US 17 then cut over to the coast. Lotsa possibilities and real nice country to cruise through. Let us know how you make out. This would be a good run to keep some sort of diary of what happens each day and post it for the crowd. Just some ideas and most of all have fun. Carl

Agree with Ancientrodder. US 301 from Gainesville to Jacksonville is a nice drive. But keep in mind that Starke, about half way, is a speed trap.

I did drive my Deuce a lot. April is warm most of the time. Leave FLA. in the warm and drive as long as you can stand the miles. When you are tired, cold or hungary, stop. Find a room. Start the next day after it warms up. Repeat as often as needed. It can be one of the road trips you talk fondly of for years. PS .... sunscreen max number #99 and good sun glasses. Good luck and if you have trouble, deuce32 and deuce are not to far from 26 and 95. You might want to go to the Charlotte NC Autofair since you are close. Randy

From Virginia Beach to Orlando area is 12 hours, drive time. Not getting to crazy with the speed. Va. Beach is about 1 1/2 hours east of 95 (turn left in Emporia Va, on the NC/Va border. There is a warm house, a full belly, your own bed and a garage of tools. Let me know if you need a stop here. Yahoo says 762 miles from here to Toronto. Almost the same fort the first leg.

Hey Al, driving a deuce roadster topless from Florida to Toronto at the beginning of April, eh! Well, some of that Northern frost must have gotten to your cortex. It,s cold up here, bud. But, what a trip! I remember back to our '34 roadster and those days (in upstate NY) when we would start out and the weather was fine and then we would return home and the weather was in the dumper big time. As some geezer once said "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." It sounds like a real fun time provided your new ride behaves itself. Incidentally, I live in Rochester and from the sounds of your travel plans you should be passing right by my house, so give me a call at 585-225-2237 if I can be of any help. I would really like to meet another nut case who is not afraid to take an unknown on such a trip. We did the same thing when we drove a '34 Olds from Dallas to Rochester a few years back. Also, if indeed you are taking the NY Thruway to Niagara Falls on your way home, give me a call for sure and I'll give you directions for a new road to travel which is quicker, much more scenic and doesn't cost anything to drive on. Neat, huh.

Hey Everyone! Thanks for the great suggestions and ideas to make this trip more of an adventure. I plan on doing just that...........what doesn't kill you will make you stronger.
As per Carl's suggestion, I will try to keep a diary and shoot some photos. Maybe Jason will post them on the site.
I'll also try to put together an itinerary so if any brave rodders out there want to hook up for an hour or so, you are more than welcome.
Thanks again.

I have found that if I put the hood sides back on the Roadster (no top either) that I get lots of engine heat through the floor boards. All my boards are wood and not sealed so I can take it all out for maintance. I do have a carpet down though. In the summer I take the sides off.
