Remember when it was safe to work in the garage. Well you don't want to be there when the garage door spring snaps and
flies off like a rocket !!!!
This this as a saftey tip to prevent any damage to your street rod, family car or even you.
Add a safety cable if there isn't one already. A safety cable is a roughly 3/16" braided steel cable threaded through the center of the spring (Thinking of the spring as a tube, the cable is threaded through the tube.) and anchored securely at each end (often to some part of the track support) and, positioned so it cannot interfere with opening and closing the door. This cable shouldn't be taut. If the spring breaks this cable will hold the parts, keeping them from shooting into something or somebody.
These springs break when the door is down and the spring is stretched and could cause serious injury if you happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Most of the times when they snap loose and break you have no warning............

I had one of those break on my door before I got divorced. Luckily, it broke while no one was around, as it put some very big dents in the wooden wall. I put cables through both springs after that. Now, I've got the coil spring that's above the door. With the new doors, you use an electric drill to adjust the spring tension, not like the old days when you had to use a metal bar (can we say 'missle'?).

Try your local hardware store/home center, Menards or Home Depot, etc.

You could even use small chain. Dog Choke chain would be strong enough if its long enough, Even has eye's for a bolt on each end.
