Got a '73 Nova rear under my '27 and the gears have slowly developed more play than normal which ocassionally produces a clunk either putting it in gear or downshifting.
Are they a problem to rebuild? Is there any adjustment?
How about changing the center section? Will it come out like a Ford? (doubts on that one)..Can I stuff a posi in it if I can find one? Gettin tired of spinning one tire anyhow lol FredP
so what wrong with primer?

This is gonna sound dumb, but have you checked your universal joints??

The "U" joints are new but to make sure, I rechecked them and can feel no play in the joints. It's definately internal. FredP

Fred, if it clunks but doesn't make a whine or howel when accelerating or deccelerating I'd bet it is not internal gear related. You might want to jack it up, block one wheel put the transmission in park and try to rock the other wheel back and forth. This should give you an idea of where the slack is. Good luck

Nope Fred, I don't have much bookmarked for 10 bolts. But I agree with ancient....it could be somewhere other than in the rearend. Crawl under there with the car in neutral or park turn the driveshaft back and forth and see if you can tell where the clunk is coming from...could even be the tranny. Sometimes you can't tell that a u-joint is bad if the driveshaft has pressure on it. I'd try it with both wheels on the ground first.
Does it clunk, growl, or whine any other time?...like going around corners?
If you crawl under it in neutral, be careful not to run over yourself.
I think you can get a posi carrier and put a posi in that housing but you have to get a carrier for whatever gear ratio you're going to run because the ring gears are different thicknesses. They do make spacers.
No the center section doesn't come out like a 8 or 9 inch ford.
I know there are guys here that know about GM rears. Maybe they can answer your questions as you find out more.

George, I put the car up so the rear end was under no pressure and the trans in park. The drive shaft had almost no play in it. Being a non-posi, I just turned one tire 'till the other started to move and then slowly turned it back till it did the same thing. There was about a 1/4 turn of play. I'm sure that's a bit much but there is no whining or cornering noise. The link you pointed me to is very good but think I'll have a pro go thru it for me. I've been thinking about an S-10 rear end but in this hot weather and having to cut out new brackets and then cleaning up the new rear of clutter and then more welding, well I think you can guess that I'm dragging my feet waiting for either better weather (this winter) or a voice from above and I'm fairly certain that this winter will occur first. Since I'm also planning on installing a Quad4 and a 2004R, I may be very busy this winter. It looks like it will definately be worth it tho. Thanks for the help!

Fred, since you already checked the rear gears, the trans. and driveshaft and ya still haven't found the chatter, nobody's asked about the axles.
How they looking?

fred,
as slammin said, it could be some wear in the axle splines.
if their is wear in the splines on the axles there could be wear in the splines in the side gears also. you might pull the cover off and check to see how much wear is on the cross pin and spiders too. this could cause a clunk without gear whine. all of this is easily fixed.

Here's a cheap ('member me?) way you might be able to "fix" the rear gears in that Chevy. Open up the rear cover and look at the side gears (the ones that the axles slide into) while someone rocks the wheel back and forth. Too much play? Shim the gears evenly on both sides. You don't have to remove the nest, just the spider axle and lock bolt, then push the axles in to the center to release the C lock. Shim behind the side gears, and reassemble. Don't forget the rear lube too. Just may work. It does on a Chrysler rear.
