Can exhaust tone change after a carb./intake swap?

I may be nuts, but it seems like that sweet music I once had is gone. It used to sound like a cross between a Must Mach I and a chevy bigblock. I installed a 625 Demon carb and a polished intake replacing the 600 Edlebrock and performer intake. Nothing else is different. Can a simple change like that affect the sound? Could it be the extra gas that Demon dumps down her throat, or possibly the intake? (or my imagination?)
I'm putting the Edlebrock carb. back on tonight and try it before reinstalling the intake. I can always put what I don't use on Kristy's Yeoman this fall.

This may sound dumb, but if you think theres a difference in sound, if I were you I'd take and either tape record the before and after or VHS video film the car running before and after and sit back and listen to it just to see if your hearing things or it is in fact different.
If ya did lose the rumble because of the intake and carb I'd leave the old setup on if your like me and ya wanna sound good.
May be the reason ya got quiet, may not be.

Thanks Grant, I thought about the video camera because it's got better sound quality than my little recorder.... I must really be eccentric to take it that far....If I wanted performance only, that Demon makes her scream and runs circles around this particular Edlebrock, but it's the sound I want.

Yeah, them Demons are nothing but gas guzzlers. Everybody I know that had 'em lost 'em in a hurry as they were paying double for gas unless ya jetted 'em waaaaaaaay down then they'd run horrible. If the original setup never failed ya, ya might as well stick with it.
Goes with the saying, If it aint broke dont fix it. LOL

It will run quieter when it is leaner, More throaty when you richen it up. That Edelbrock was probably dumping more fuel than the Demon.

I swapped carbs, but need to pick up another fuel line tomorrow before firing it up. I was burning a whole bunch of picklejuice with the Demon... 'course, maybe smoking the tires at every intersection and leadfootin' it everywhere I went may have had something to do with it.

You took the distributor out....
It's highly improbable you got the timing set EXACTLY the same as it was before and that will make it sound different, if nothing else,

Lance, Any change in the configuration, or size of the heatriser passage will change the tone of the exhaust. If you completely close them off the tone will be the loudest. The larger you open the passage the milder the exhaust tone will be. The manifold you swapped to probably allowes a different amount of exhaust gas to pass through the manifold. This exhaust gas passage not only heats the manifold for better economy but also acts as an equalizer between the two sides of the exhaust system. If you want those pipes to really sound off, put a thin piece of tin between the manifold gasket and the manifold to cover each heat riser hole the next time you have the manifold off.

Thank you fellas for the advice.
I fired her up today with the Edlebrock carb and she sounds like she used to. I'm thrilled, but confused. It doesn't make sense that only the carb change would do that. Anyway, Carl, you suggested blocking off the heat riser passages. When I changed manifolds, I installed a stainless steel plate that was sent with the gasket kit to do just that. Dr J, I adjusted the timing again right after she was warmed up and it was off 2 Degrees advanced. Ed, I rebuilt the Edlebrock before sticking it back on, don't know yet how rich or lean I am yet, but at least it's not blowing black smoke anymore.
I've got a new problem to deal with. The Sanderson header on the drivers side is blowing past two weld joints at the collector. This is the 2nd set of Sandersons I've gone through now in two years. When I called them to complain, I was told once again that I didn't have my engine tuned properly. Probably true. But I thought they'd be more 'user friendly' than that. I was given the impression that if I held my tongue just right while installing them on February 29th when Jupiter aligned with Mars, burned only 89.65 octane, at an altitude of 1600 ft. with relative humidity no greater than 55%, and never put fingerprints on them, I wouldn't burn off the hallowed ceramic coating of .00004 thickness...........
I welded the piss out of it this afternoon, it looks like Sh**, but they don't leak! I'll buy another brand while at the nats next week. Any suggestions for block hugger style headers? (thicker than electrical conduit?)
It's time to shower and open that first Miller. Kristy's putting Johnsonville brats on the grill as I type. 'Nite all.

Try S/S Headers. Extreme quality goes into every one. I use their full legnth headers in my coupe, I have found no better header. Check em out, You wont be sorry.

EDCROOZER........ Do you have angle plug heads? And how much room do you have at cylinder #7 ? I am getting ready to put the new Fast Burn aluminum Chevrolet heads on the DEUCE ( a 40 HP gain according to Chevrolet ) but I have a column shifter for the Turbo 400, it is fairly close at #7. Also are youur exhaust tubes 1 and 3/4 " ?

Hi Randy, No, I do not have angle plug heads, I do have the 1 3/4 primaries though. S/S builds the headers to your specs, Tell them your needs and they make them as to your specs. I am running full legnth headers in my deuce and room to spare. No clearance troubles and best of all...NO LEAKS! S/S was very easy to deal with.

"with relative humidity no greater than 55%,"
Lance, you've got your numbers transposed. Switch the two fives, and you'll have it right. With 55% percent humidity, instead of 55%, the headers would've lasted much longer. LOL.

Couper,
Guess it musta been 56% humidity when I put a set of Sanderson block huggers on a ZZ3 awhile back, cause they blew out the welds in the exact same place. That was with only 3000 miles on em, called Sanderson and the "lady" there gave me the exact same song and dance. I doubt if the company gets much repeat customer business.
