Replacing a Cutlass gas tank

Gotta replace the tank in my sons '87 Cutlass. Got a new tank, but in the manual it calls for a special tool to remove / replace the keeper on the sending unit. Do I have to use this tool, or will I be able to "McGuiver" the keeper?

Brass hammer, dull brass punch and a little bit of penetrating oil........McGuiver the heck out of it,I do it like this at least once a week and I ain't blowed up yet !!!! Just be sure to keep your drop light away from the tank when you got it opened up.......

Good to know. Thanks. I'm not worried about removal, just putting the new one in place without hurting it. And, I do know how easy it is to blow up a tank with even a little fumes in it.
