AUGUST 1ST, 2ND AND 3RD OF THE YEAR 2003 WILL BE "THE NOSTALGIA WEEKENDER
AND 3 DAY DRAG RACE"
Where? THE SOUTH BUTLER DRAG STRIP(20 miles outside of Syracuse NY)
Whats the History? Well, This Drag strip was originally started in 1957 and
closed down some time in the early 70's. It was the first U.S. Drag strip to
ever install timing lights and many records were set there back in the late
50's and early 60's. The land is now privately owned by a cornfield farmer
who has kept the track on his property for all of these years.
What does the track look like and what shape is it in? The track consists of
two separate quarter mile single lane blacktop paved strips that have not
been touched in decades. There is a 10 foot section of grass separating the
two lanes. To the left is a gigantic cornfield and to the right is a
gigantic cornfield. The track is still in great condition until the very end
where it is starting to tear up.
Will it be a full quarter mile race? As the track stands now no, but there
is plenty of track to run an eight mile or an .875(3/4 of a 1/4mile, this is
what the local bikers who have been racing on this track recently have been
running). My vote would be for a .875, I don't think an 1/8 mile is long
enough, and .875 is just long enough, plus it will keep the top speeds under
100mph.
Do NHRA rules and regulations apply? HELL NO! This track is on private
property. We'll have our own rules and safety inspection team, but we won't
have to abide by any NHRA Bullshit!
What do the Hotel accommodations in the area look like? Right now they look
scarce and at least a 10 or 15 min car ride away, the main thing about this
show is that the property is hundreds of acres large and the owner has
permitted us to camp out on the track(nearby cornfields he has already mowed
down for camping purposes) for the entire weekend.
So it would be smarter/easier to camp there.
How far away is this place from me? From NYC about 4 hours, From Boston
about 6 hours. The location is just outside of Syracuse NY, so you do the
math.
Which and what kind of acts will be performing? Still working on it and open
to any suggestions.
Will my Club have a spot of its own to park? Sure, just let us know you're
coming. We really would like to see as many clubs as possible to come to
this event and participate, and hopefully build a race car to participate
also.
What is the Cut off year for vehicles? The cut off year for the show will be
1963 and earlier. Some private invitations are going out to some newer
vehicles(that have been located) that have set records on this track back in
the late 60's.
Can any car race? OF COURSE!, as long as it passes a safety check. ALL
vehicles are encouraged to race whether you have a stock flat 6 or a blown
hemi, that's what makes this car show different.
What other events will take place? So far we have planned: a pig roast, an
engine block tossing contest, club race car competition, flame thrower
contest, burnout contest, tattoo contest, tug of war, Bands, DJ's, Car Show,
Swap meet, Vendors, Camping, slide show and scrap books showing the history
of the track, Dancing, Fire breathing Contest, etc...
Whats the deal with this car club race car competition? This is still up in
the air, but the idea is to get as many car clubs to build their own low
buck, bare bones, nostalgia styled race car and race it against all the
other participating clubs. Originally we were talking very strict rules on
what motors would be allowed, and a parts cut off year of 1955 or older. I
am really anxious to hear what clubs would like to participate in this, and
what rules they would be comfortable with.
How is it possible to put on an event like this? This is private property,
every couple of years the owner rents out the track for people to race on.
Last year the Iron Horsemen(a biker club in NY) rented out the track for a
day and had 3200 bikes!!! show up!!! The cops never bothered them, and we
all know how bikers can get.(No offense meant.)
What else is there around the area? Cornfields, lots of cornfields to get
lost in. No, there are towns nearby. Nearby is a vague word, in the opinion
of a city slicker "This place is in the middle of Freakin Idaho"
Will alcohol be allowed? Yes of course, beer and wine will be sold at the
event if you are of age, and as always you're more than welcome to bring
your own, BUT, BUT, NO ALCOHOL WILL BE ALLOWED IN THE PITS OR ON THE
RACETRACK, AND NO ONE RACING WILL BE DRINKING WHATSOEVER!!! THIS WILL BE
HEAVILY ENFORCED!
Sounds like a interesting idea, how can I help? Well, first off your
input... Alot of this is still in the planning stages so the point of this
email is to see:
Who will make the drive out?
Who would you like to see perform?
How do you feel about camping out in the middle of a cornfield in the
beginning of August?
Who is willing to build or bring a car to actually go down the track?
What clubs are willing to participate?
Who is willing to volunteer a couple hours a day to help with the event( pit
safety inspection team, ticket collector, timing stand duties, etc...)
PLEASE FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO ANYONE WHO MIGHT HAVE AN INTEREST IN THIS
EVENT.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME... I look forward to hearing your feedback,
-Torr

Your "top-less" cruzn buddy, Denise
This gives you something to shoot for!
Forget getting it done. Slap a drivetrain in it, but a trailer hitch on that billet beater with the bullet holes, and come on up!

All I have to do is finish the suspension, and go thorugh the Hemi. Steering is still an issue I have not settled. Need to choose a steering column/ box. You can bet it'll have DSRA on it, chalk or shoe polish.
