Glory Days Are Here
by hammer

Fond memorys are constantly surfacing with mainstream American websites like SRS. As some members will say--you can join the fray!I have not jumped into the fray very often, but it is still fun to read what mainstream rodders are thinking and doing now. Many of us look at cars as an art form.I have always followed my instincts of what I see when I look at the style of the form.I used to gaze out from the study hall window at high school and draw the 40 Ford Coupe that sat day after day in a field nearby. This was in the early fifties when the rush was just starting to form towards rodding. It is good to see that the beat goes on and on . Another point I wish to add,is how fast membership in SRS is growing. It is so much the way that Hemmings Motor News took off with its circulation when it started out.Glory Days are here !

I couldn't agree with you more Hammer. We have a Wensday night hang out at a clubhouse we are building. fellow owns some land and buildings, he's big into rodding etc. So every wensday night we get together starting about 5-530. We throw in 10 bucks and have a meal, last night we had lasagna and it was GREAT! We've set the place up with a fine kitchen and have all sorts of goodies there as well as cars. One night as i looked out the open garage door and saw the rods as well as stock cars I got this real sense of deja vue' If it didn't look JUST like one of those artist concepts of a cruise night hang out then nothing did. I even commented about it to a buddy of mine sitting next to me.
Yes, for sure we're living in the Glory days right now. matter of fact, that's what my 40 Ford was called.

46 Driver,I read a thread and your profile the other day.Great job on that profile! I just edited my profile a little by switching my mugshot to a picture of one of my past rides, and, oh what fun it was to ride!Sounds like you folks are having some cool club meets. The kitchen idea is a great thing to do . I was thinking that you or someone in the group ought to get a few shots of the rods parked about the clubhouse. There isen't a cooler landscape than that.I don't have a scanner yet, but when I do get one I want to do a few uploads on SRS. I'll bet we could get a flurry of photos from the membership(SRS) on some of their favorites. Some of the ones that have been on have all been real cool to see. I have one I took of an old Ford Flathead I'd pulled from a forty coupe. It had a real forelorned look about it.I'll follow that with---- wish I still had that flathead.

I'll see what I can do about coming up with a photo with some of the cars around the shop/clubhouse. Tho most are using their daily drivers now due to all the cruddy weather. I'll pick one off the bulletin board in the shop and scan it next week.
Sounds like a good idea tho, anyone else with a group photo to share?

I know what you mean about the snow for sure as I'm smack dab in the middle of a snow belt here in Kalkaska,I know it looks like Alaska--oh well anyway.I was refering to the right time of the year for some of us Midwesterners anyway.Anybody else that wants to show their photos in this season of tilt can jump in. I have a Christmas card that is a artists rendering of 50's cars all gathered up around an old garage in the snow. Also want to mention to Denise that I'm glad she has a understanding neighborhood there in my old hometown. You never did mention the streetname but it could be very close to the street I lived on.Much of their good nature comes from the fact that they are the sons and daughters of car people too. Also Denise have you ever been to the Jack Roush engine building facility there in Livonia?Glory days are here describes the picture you posted very well.

I just HAVE to add my two cents worht to this discussion. I have only observed for the past several months probably because of lethargy but, this one has got me to thinking! Absolutely, these are the glory days. No question about it. What the heck, with auto manufactures producing their very own versions of street rods (Prowler and PT-Cruiser) and 50's classics (T-Bird, it has to be the best. With places like Boyds, Bobby Griffey's, Steve's Auto Restoration leading the way and showing the average guy that it can be done everyone wants to be in on this new revolution, even though it started many years ago when the first T was "fixed" up by a young kid looking to personalize his car.
In our city we have several car clubs with the one I belong to (Rochester Street Rods) being, I believe, the largest. We have over 130 members at present! We have been around for over 30 years and even the old time members are amazed at the number of gearheads that are showing up. We have outgrown our present meeting hall and are looking for another. This after a move less than two years ago because of size (parking lot in that case). We do more things based around car related activities than I can ever remember, and I go back a long way. We travel to different cities to do lots of car "stuff". We have a "Gimps and Geezers" group that consists of, well, gimps and geezers that get together for lunch once a week to enjoy each other's company and swap car related lies. We schedule things to do on those days and generally have the best times. We also meet for breakfast every Saturday so that those who still work can gather to yak about their favorite subject-the car!
Our club members help each member with projects and whatever. We generally like each other and our common denominator is the car, whether it be a street rod, hot rod, altered car, race car, muscle car... you name it we like it.
We are planning our annual trip to the Detroit Autorama this year and we have to schedule two(!) buses to take everyone!!! We are also planning a trip to Vegas for the NHRA drags in April. Our wives are particularly happy with that decision. You bet, these are the glory days. I'm glad I'm here to enjoy them.

Hey Emil, there is always room for one more at the Gimp and Geezer lunch held each and every Thursday So, if you are so inclined and are ever in the neighborhood give me a call and lunch is on me.
Denise, although I didn't say it in the previous post to you, the same invite goes to you.

sounds good John! Gonna pull up my Yahoo map and look it up lol. lunch is on you huh? I quit smoking the other day, (amazingly still no withdrawal symtoms!) and am eating quite a bit more. With my limp and passed breathing problems I'd fit right into Gimps and Weezers, tho geezer fits well also. Make sure you bring your credit card LOL.

Emil, good for you on quitting smoking. That is a habit I can personally confirm you will be eternally happy that you quit. I did it myself many years ago and am still thrilled that I did. And, don't worry about the cost to me for your lunch, I'll be glad to foot whatever it is! By the way, Rochester is just up the NY state Thruway about a 5 1/2 to 6 hour ride. If you need a place to crash, you can stay with us. We always are glad to have guests for a visit.

Sounds like a great group of guys. I'd like to take this opportunity to invite the guys to tour Lear with my group of friends on that Sunday morning of the Autorama. My buddy "sleddog" will be showing us the crash test dummy stuff. Probley the best facility tour I've ever been on. The tour last a couple of hours. Chat with the guys about it and let me know if your interested.

The photo is of Debb (KustomLincolnLady) and myself sitting on a couple of dummies laps. The most expensive lap I've been on! LOL ($250,000 each)

Wow, thanks Denise. That is a really delightful offer and I am sure that many of the members (did I say that there may be as many as 80-90) would be interested in such a tour. The only problem is logistics on our side. I am not sure what arrangements have been made for the busses that are hauling us around. I will be sure, however, to bring this up at tomorrow's breakfast. I'll let you know for sure. Again, a BIG thank you for the invite.

Yep, been to Roush's place many times, even though I'm not a F@#D fan. LOL He has purchased the huge GM facility on Plymouth Road between Middlebelt and Insker Roads. About half a mile as the crow flys. I'm not sure if he still has the place on Schoolcraft. He use to have a cruz nite once a month there. Small parking area killed it though. The new place would be PERFECT for a cruzn nite.

I live on the East end of Livonia off Middlebelt near Lyndon. I live on a street that only has 17 houses. My folks live on the corner at the other end. My house is the last one at this end. The street curves so we can't see each others houses. Cool neighbors, cool neighborhood.
