Where were you 39 years ago today when you heard the news that President Kennedy was shot? I was too young to remember. What were you doing and what do you remember from that awful day?

Grant, very sorry to hear about your mother. I've known you for a couple of years now and just when you think you know someone, wham, they throw you a curve. You are much to young to have had to bury your mother. I am truely sorry.
Randy, this also is something new to me. I had never heard or read that, and I thought I read alot. We're you living in the south at the time? Was this nationwide or a "southern" feeling?

Kennedy won the election by a small minority. Alot of people did not want a Catholic as President. They might have thought the pope would be running the country. I don't remember it getting announced in class as I was in the first grade. I do remember all of the TV coverage and the funeral procession. In my rather small world, it really cut into the good TV shows.

I was home from school sick with the mumps. I was 12. I was shocked when it came over the tv and it was a real sobering lesson in life I thought. Then to see Oswald shot live on TV too. Wow, history I guess.
I visited the grave only a year later at Arlington. It sure gave me a perspective of history!

Denise, I was sitting at my desk at work when one of the secretary's came in all teary-eyed and told us that the President had been shot in Dallas. She didn't know if he was dead or anything further. I wasn't a big Kennedy fan (and still am not caught up in that fever) but, I definitely was quite sad that this had happened. The majority of the people in my office were Republicans and some og them seemed actually to be glad that it happened (I think all bluster) but, when we heard more details we were ALL very saddened by the event. I'll never forget and I wish it never happened!

I was in Senior High School. It was announced over the PA for everyone to come to the assembley hall. The principal said that the President had been shot and was not expected to live.
Lots of people cheered.
JFK was not loved by everyone as is the misconception.
The principal dismissed school and told everyone we could go home. Then I cheered.

I was crankin wrenchs at the City Of Livonia public works garage when a equipment operator came and said the president had been shot, there was an immediate sense of disbelief that our young president could be shot. On a lighter note Denise, I did live right in a nearby neighborhood to Lyndon Street. I was on Lyons Street second house on the northwest corner of Jamison Street.I left there in 1968.I used Lyndon as a shortcut to get out onto Middlebelt easier with the light on the way to work at Krogers. To mention Roushs operations, Is it true that they sell electric power from running the dyno's there? I'd heard that someplace.

I was in assembly when the assistant princible came on stage and whispered to the princible that John was murdered. Eveyone was in shock. The teachers as well as many students were in tears.
We were dismissed and I walked home. i was a Kennedy admirer then. My neighbor's father was the post master and heavily involved in kennedy;s campaign and i got into the fray and passed out hundreds of bumper stickers, etc.
But then again, that's when a coke was a coke~~~~~

Amen, thank you for putting into words what I could not. I was seeing too much red I guess. I spent 20 years in the Navy with my Dad, Mom and sister. Yes, the whole family is in the military when one family member enlists. I was very proud of my parents. My dad for servicing his country and my mom for standing by his side so many years. Months at a time, Dad was out a sea. The seperation is as rough on the loved ones at home as it is on the one serving. I had a hero in my life and that was my Dad.
Thank you Tom for backing up what my dad just told me. And thanks for serving our country so proudly.
BTW: We were in San Diego at the same time, only I was toddling around in diapers. :))
I was in School...1st Grade...School was dismissed. We also had no school the day of the funeral,my only clear recollection was seeing the horse drawn Caison(sp?) with his flag draped coffin slowly moving along the television screen and the tears rolling down my Mom's cheeks.

I was working in a machine shop as an apprentice machinist here in Austin Texas. Austin was his next stop that afternoon. When we heard the news we all stood in silent disbelief. The rest of the day was very quite as each man reflected on what had just happened. There was no joy regardless of whether he was liked or disliked, he was our President. I had paid little attention to politics (20 years old), my main thoughts were new wife, cars, job, cars, drag racing, hunting, shooting, cars. I still to this day am saddened that some people find the only solution to their dislike of a person is murder. I was in the Air Force and no fly boy I ever met would cheer for that kind of action but instead would have been deeply troubled by the event. When I think about it very much even today I become sad, and my political beliefs are strongly conservative. We will never know what greatness may have become of his pesindentancy just as we will never know of any future failures that may have occurred. I for one will always be strongly against any person that attempts to harm any President of my United States.
As Duece said "The world changed".

Pink rod, I agree with you completely. IF and I say IF, members of the United States Navy cheered when their Commander In Chief was assassinated, that is about the highest level of insubordination I can think of. You’re right, they should have been court marshaled. Then to compare him to the leader of a communist country really frosts my balls. I have absolutely NO respect whatsoever for someone that behaves that way, especially a veteran. I didn’t agree with the politics of Viet Nam but as a member of this nation’s armed forces I swore to follow orders without question and did that with pride. Some people know what serving your country means and some seem to take it lightly. So lightly I'm ashamed of them.

Im telling you the way it happened, if you want to rewrite history be my guest. Revisionists are a big thing these days.
And dont get your (or the rest of you crybabies) sorry asses in an uproar about patriotism. I spent 28 years serving my country.
Our oath was to OBEY orders, not like the asshole that sometimes gave them. Kennedy was hated after the Bay of Pigs fiasco. His religion had nothing to do with it. You will find that guys working as a team in close quarters for long periods get very tolerant of little things like religion. Now, if you didnt shower daily that was altogether different!
The announcement went down particularly strong on my ship because we were there. Saw the abandonment of the Cuban freedom fighters. And then the Cuban "navy" came out firing at us and we couldnt fire back. Friggin goddamn politicians.
Court martial, insubordination! For what? A dead man doesnt give orders. LBJ was in charge.
Actually some of the responses here dont surprise me at all. This board never could tolerate differing opinions very well. Particularly if they dont fit into the Oh so mighty PC mold.
Get a life.

286, I normally don’t get involved in politics or religion. And most of the times I just keep to myself. But what you said just pis*es me off. I’ve got to give you credit for saying what’s on your mind. But that’s what troubles me…. you’re mind. If you don’t like the rules of the game or who’s running it, get out. Like out of this fine nation of ours.
If it weren’t for all of the fine servicemen here on SRS, you’d be speaking another language.
The only time I cheer when someone dies, it’s when there put to death, like Timothy McVay. In my eyes, you are one of two things… an A-hole or a traitor. Either way, it doesn’t matter to me. I wouldn’t give you the time of day for any posts you put here from now on.

Hi,
I was 21 and driving (what else) a company shuttle car with executives from several offices. It wasn't 10 seconds when all he...l broke loose in the car. Everyone wanted to go somewhere fast!! got my first taste of corporate politics. We went in decending order (of importance)to each's destination!!! Got a chance to go fast on the streets without care too!! " step on it kid" was the universal command. For about 45 minutes I did nothing but stomp on the gas and the brakes of that old station wagon. Most of them knew me as a hotrod racer so they just cheered me on as we squeeled around the corners. One of the saddest days in my life actually.

I was in the snack bar at McNair Barracks in Berlin. Someone came in from the nearby movie theater and told us the President had been shot. We went back to the Company and started loading up the equipment. By the time they called the alert we were ready to go. We stayed on alert for about 24 hours as I recall. We were all very subdued. No one cheered. JFK had been in Berlin a few months before and given his "I am a Berliner" speach. The Berliners loved him. The city went into mourning. When the Kennedy half dollars came out all of my German friends wanted one.
Johnson sent me to Viet Nam. I don't know and can not speculate on what Kennedy would have done. But I know the man had guts and I suspect the outcome would have been different.

Come to think of it, I wonder why he's out of a job. Don't recall him telling us waht happened last June. Anyone know why he's siting around the house all day building a web server?
I'm sure he would have told us why he was out of work if he wasn't ashamed of the fact. ....or have I missed said post somewhere.
Anyway, he'll soon have his own server where he can do as he pleases and, hopefully, he'll leave us alone.

during the cuban crises I was in key west fla. with vfaw-3 our jets were flying during the blockade and were firing on anything in the water it was a tense time to say the least but I never heard anything but respect for the way JFK stood his ground. hopefully the closest this country ever comes to all out nuclear war.
when jfk was shot I was also in san diego. air base on north island.working on the special services fishing boat (an 83 ft converted coast guard cutter, talk about a hot rod boat)I was hanging over the side in a sling scraping barnicles. when the word came over the radio everything stopped and it was total silence for at least a 1/2 hour it will always remain somber.had any one cheered at that time we'd have thrown them in the bay for target pratice. still might!!

Yes, Denise, I was living in Charleston SC at the time. You were a baby at the time(you're still a babe to most of us)and time has a way of making heroes out of dead people.
JFK only won in the electoral college. Mr. Nixon vote the popular vote. JFK was rumored to be having affairs, botched the Bay of Pigs, and had a slew of "programs". His brothers Bobby and Teddy were considered by many to be incompetent and have low morals. His father was a boot legger and a womanizer. His civil rights legistation agenda angered many people. Some were angered because it did not go far enough, others because it went too far.
All the branches of the military are represented in Charleston. He was considered, by many in the services, to be a incompentent leader.
Time has a way of glamorizing the dead. Look at James Dean. He was a homosexual. Not a acceptable way of life in the 50's. Rock Hudson........ a deception. Buddy Holly..... always a great now that he's dead, along with the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens.
I was too young to vote in 1960, so I did not have a opinion about his death at the time. I did feel sorry for his children. I just cheered when they said we could go HOME from school. I just went to my 55 Chevy and drove home.

Was pulling into the gas station to gas up my 57 Buick hardtop. Don't remember anyone cheering, just shocked disbelief. Haven't heard of a politician yet whose an innocent Snow White type. As far as Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens not being anything. Where were you hidding out back then? Or maybe a better question is did you listen to rock & roll?

No place in my previos post have I stated that I cheered the death of JFK. I have even stated that I had no opinion.....either way. I simply stated what happened where I was. Others stated the same thing. Some folks cheered.
As for the three who died "on the day the music died" Buddy Holly was the most sucessful of the three judging by record sales and the Billboard Top 40. There are no music stars from that era who lived another 25 - 30 who did not become has beens and were shadows of their former selves musically. Elvis was still mildly popular at the time of his death (15 years after the music died) but had no commerical music sucess on the charts and he is considered 'the King'. Maybe Buddy Holly would be the exception. We will never know...will we? As for the other 2, they are a footnote in music history.
Country Music suffered a similar tragedy during the same time period when Patsy Cline died in a very similar plane crash. Do you know who the other two footnotes in music history that where on her plane and died?

I guess with a eulogy like that, he wasn't much different than Prez Clinton......I was on my second hitch in the Army and stationed at Ft Hood Texas. I heard it while driving an 18 wheeler thru the front gate from the guard. I turned on the portable and listened to it in shock. I was a fan of his even with his "indescretions" and he was my Commander-in-Chief also. No one cheered about it any where on or off base. It put a stigma on Dallas and Texans in general that in some places last to this day.
Ya don't have to like someone regardless of what they do in politics but to cheer at someone being killed comes from very small and bigoted minds. I didn't cheer when Oswald was killed either.
He served in daily pain that was debilitating and some of that was from his bravery in action during WW2. I can admire that on it's on merits alone. At least he didn't try to dodge service like a couple of later day presidents did. And he wasn't in danger of impeachment either.
Sorry to get carried away on your dime Denise...It was a very sobering time for me and many others.

Hit the nail on the head deuce.
If you ever read the facts of what happened with Teddy, you would know that he murdered Mary Jo just as sure as if he put a gun to her head.
And he not only did no time for it, they keep electing the drunk over and over!
JFK was no better than Bill Clinton. He just never got caught!
Where was I then? 8 years old, playing with my slot cars in the celler.
I remember I was PO'ed 'cause I couldn't get my 6 volt front engine dragster to hook up on my 12 volt track.
My mom yelled down and told me.
I was 8, didn't really understand.
I know I got real tired of watching over and over, "and here comes Oswald. POP!"

I do not believe anyone really understood what happened that day when it happened. The world changed. Then you got to see a man shot to death on TV, LIVE..... while in custody.
I am surprised that we have not seen more shootings and killings of public figures in the past few years. RFK got it. So did the Rev.King. A lot of people died while being associated with the Clintons. A lot of others went to jail.
The press can change History in print and therefore change the futures mind about what really went down. Mr Nixon and his bunch were wrong to be in the Watergate building. They were MORE wrong to get caught. I do not believe for 1 minute that they were the first to do this.....they were just the first to get caught.

I was in my second year of high school. They never told us at school. My buddy and I were riding home in another guy's car and we heard it on the radio. We were stunned, and when we got out at the corner to walk up the street to our homes, people were coming out of their houses crying. Remember this was in Canada. It must have been worse for our friends in the States! Terrible day.

If you don't like it you can get on the same boat as 286 and we'll be more than happy to use it for target practice.
I'm sure you either don't or can't read...There are books written before, during, and after the assination of both the JFK and RFK with actual realtime criticizem of their good and bad points and politics. RFK took on the biggest crime bosses of the time and didn't let up on them. Wish he was around when the wusses went to Canada and yes, I'd like to put them on the same boat too for target practice. A boat load of cheering squids should be at the bottom where they belong.

I'm not going to jump into the fray about patriotism
All I have to say is if you don't like it here you can get on the same boat the ones who don't want our kids to learn the pledge of allegence or prayer in school should be on already

I was working at K.S.Pease Chrysler Plymouth in Westfield and the radio was on in the shop. That's how I heard it.
I never really liked the man nor what he stood for but I was saddened to hear he'd been shot and killed.
