Easy way to get it up??
by 40
Posted: 11/24/2002 00:41 EST

Was a fairly nice day for November so decided to go out and put a few miles on the new ride. After driving a hundred miles or so...have decided I'd like to raise the front suspension an inch or so.The ride height was perfect but the car "settled" a bit more than antcipated.I am adjusted almost to the top on the coilovers and already have 18" wheels.....Any ideas for a simple cure??Thanks!

Vigara coil pills?

Just use 1/2 a pill at first. Then you may need to use a full pill if it was not enough.

Or.....Falling out of bed! Rick...No drop spindles,I wish it were that easy.We opted for a cross member with a 2"drop built in instead of the stock Heidts, the lower control arms are parralell with the ground, the car looks great in the weeds and it drives super, just getting slight tire rub when the wheels are turned lock to lock and hitting a bump.Already have the smallest 18" tire I can run,two solutions that come to mind...Air bags,of which I have no experience...or build a stop that will prevent the spindle from turning that far.Still listening for a better solution.....

How 'bout grinding off the pretty paint and relocating the upper shock mount in a lower position? Dave

Daryle,
Short of major surgery you could just go to a little bit stiffer coil over. They're availabe in all sorts of stiffnesses. You con't want to get too stiff but if your hitting you need to do something. I don't think I would put in stops. Someone might need that turning angle sometime in an emergency.
I went through the same thing on my Cobra. A while after I built it it settled more than the adjustment range. Looked nice but the bellhousing would touch high spots in the road occasionally. I just went to a little stiffer spring and no more hitting. It didn't make much difference in the already stiff ride. I also trimmed the lip off the bottom of the bellhousing.

Daryle. Since you have the coilover as far as they can be. Do you have dropped spindle's? If so you might have to take them off.

Some Coilover Shocks come in different lengths. Is it possible to find something a little longer for your application? rj

A spacer between the adjusting nut and spring or like Bob a different spring rate. Different back spacing on the wheels.

Could you trade your coils in for some a few pounds heavier? Shouldn't affect ride too much, but might raise the car a bit - I did this with the coil overs on the back of my pro street deuce pick up.

At my age, I drink as little water as possible in the evenings! Makes the 4 AM trips a little quicker!!LOL
If you have good coilovers, the coil can be changed out for stiffer ones and it might not take as much as you think. If you know what you have or can weigh a corner, the company that makes them can probably zero right in for ya.

I used to use a cup type design spring spacer sometimes to cheat while racing on the dirt...you could screw it up to add ride height...it would sit on top of the spring.

Daryle, sounds like you've got the wrong length of coilovers especially if you are bottoming out and are adjusted all the way up. Bite the bullet and buy the right size with a stiffer spring load. As many cars as you build, you know the old ones won't go to waste.

Lance,That's exactly the solution I've come up with.I talked to both Carrera(which I have now) and also Alden, the fellows at Alden were extremely pleasant and knowledgable so think I will give them a try...have never used thier product before.I do need to get the distance between upper and lower mounts at ride height,so off to my buddys exhaust shop I go tomorrow...Right after I get back from pheasant hunting.Have to have it on a hoist as I can't begin to get my fat A$$ under there to measure it.Sure seems to be getting harder and harder to fit work into my schedule...really shows on my bank statements though!Am betting if I raise it up an inch,I'll have to have it realligned,as for the old coilovers...they'll work just fine on the 36 coupe. If I would just go get a real job,I could afford an airbag system!See Ya!!

The Penn State shirt is gone! Better keep it around just in case for next year though!Definately don't want to EVER buy another one:>)On the coilovers, they weren't bottoming out...just letting the fender rub the tire when turned to full lock and hitting a bump such as turning into a steep driveway entrance.Still think a longer shock is the answer and perhaps a bit stiffer spring.See Ya!!
