Just for Fun (Childhood toys)
by cruzr
Posted: 11/24/2002 12:06 EST

Since just for fun TV shows went over good and brought back memories,

What kind of toys did you play with when you were a child.
Or which one's do you remember?

anybody remember:
Tiddly Winks
Pick up Sticks

Hoe about: Tinker toys, and Cootie.
Talk about trains, it must of been the Lionel train set.

I remember the paddel with the ball on the end of a rubber band. About the only thing i can remember about that was the spankings i got from that thing.

we used to get these rubberized cars at the 5 & 10. A lot of 55-57 T'birds and I remember a red El Dorado convertable. Had dozens of cars and we'd make roads thru a dirt hill, measuring about 5' square in our backyard as well as one in my friend's backyard. Then there were those neat cars we'd get in the cereal boxes, these were good for indoor car shows and hang-outs, hard plastic with white plastic wheels.
We also had these awesome wind up midget racers, quality cars that ran like all get out and go.
Another favorite pass time was building models, cars, planes etc and sticking a firecracker in them and blowing them up. I didn't say we were smart but we did have fun. We'd build these balsa planes and tape CO2 cartridges to them and had a spring loaded syringe to launch the planes.
Then there were the milk box racers we built. Racing down hill, backwards on dares. The whole neighborhood got into it which led to demo derbies with them.
Then as we got older we started building homemade minibikes and go carts. Sometimes we'd even equip them with brakes!
(Survivor of my youth).

Emil, ya brought up a fun topic! CO2 powered anything! In my case, I built models from models back then but one of the best was building balsa wood cars and putting an eyelet at each end. High school was big and the halls were very long corridors and those of us that raced would run a line of thread from one end to the other thru the eyelets to kepp em straight. That little spring loaded "thingy" was used at the count down and the car that hit the other end first had braggin rights for the day.
Yeah, erector sets w/ motors, lincoln logs, best family game back then was scrabble and my Dad was just about unbeatable..(a crossword nut!) found a light weight english bike frame in a junkyard and eventually wheels, only problem I had was that the gears were the same size! Tough to take off but once I was rolling, look out! I painted it with a "flit gun" bug sprayer and left over paint Dad had from his '49 Chrysler convert! Ruined the gun but Dad was impressed...Made my month! LOL

I had the lincoln logs and a few nice tonka trucks, some model airplanes and a train set or 2,but what I remember the most is working with my Dad in his wood shop. Since he was a carpenter,he had ALL the neat tool/toys. Only thing I ever made was sawdust!!
Best memory, was the day he taught me how to wire up a simple circuit on an old piece of wood.Just a socket and switch and some wire. Pretty high tech stuff for a 10 year old!!! Thanks cruzr..............

Who could forget the sound of a carton of bb's loading into the the famous Red Rider bb gun. The metalic sound once in the gun, or the little bit of smoke that came out after a shot. Slingshots were hand crafted with finger grips and maybe a bears head carved on the bottom of the handle. Two of us in the neighborhood would load up our back pockets, throw a tin can on top of the garage roof, then see how long we could keep it up there. We got away with that untill my friends dad noticed some shingle damage. The real test of skill was to toss bottles into a slow part of the creek, then run down stream to the rapids, set a good range, then shoot before they got away.I guess we diden't even think about the downside of it.My grandson is almost old enough to take charge of my old slingshot now. Wonder what he'll do.

This is really funny that this thread came up now. I was just talking to my dad last nite making sure all my Hot Wheels and the orange track was still up in the attic. He said "ure was and why don't you come over on Monday and get all that s@#T out of my way"!

My folks (mom mostly) never threw out anything. Beside all my car stuff, up there should be my tinker toys, lincoln logs, legos, stuffed animals, etc. I had already gotten all my Barbie stuff out a couple of years ago. I still have all the "gilrs", their clothes and accessories, her Corvette, camper, horse, townhouse, and AIRPLANE! Yahoo!! Hey Deb, the next time you come over you should bring your Barbies and "they" can all "visit"! LOL

Other Barbie type dolls that I had were called "Dawn" dolls. Slightly smaller version. Those will be up there too in their own carry case and clothes trunk. Also had a lot of "kiddles". A very small doll like a Barbie. I have a sister who is only one year younger so we played together with "dolls" alot. When the Hot Wheels, track and army guys came out, Dad would play too.

Mom liked to play not only board games with us but cards as well. Mom is still a card wiz and her and dad play every nite while watching TV. She's addicted for sure! LOL

Growing up in SO CAL I spent ALOT of time on my skateboard and roller skates. Since we played outside year round, I don't remember watching alot of TV.

Buddy L trucks, plastic cars, and lots of hotwheels and matchbox cars. I still have quite a few of my old matchbox cars. Man, my pedal car, I remember when my daddy finally got rid of it the tires were worn out. I don't know how I did that because there was only a small side walk at our house. I must have drove many miles on that dirt in Dover NC!

Anyone play double deck Pinochle??? Dad taught the whole family and I played it in the service and we taught our kids too. The boys really were so good I think that my wife and I readjusted our signals (cheating!!!) and got them back LOL ...roller skating, I think I was born with them on! By the time I was about 14, I was doing some serious dancing...This was NOT in line skating either !!!!!and then came the command over the PA; "all skate backwards" and all heck would break loose with the racing in the opposite direction AND backwards!!! I was tough to beat! fond memories.. My daughter still wears my skating jacket with the name of the rink on the back! Guess that jacket is about 49 years old now and still in excellent condition! I'm still trying to rationalize in my mind about listing the troubles we got into....nah, some other time..lol

Fred, you sound just like my Dad. He was awesome on eight wheels. Him and my Mom met at a roller rink. In the late 70's, early 80's mom would rent the local roller rink out a couple of times a year and all our friends and family would come. What a BLAST, till the rink burned down and they never rebuilt.

I probley should do more skating and get back into shape!! LOL

I'd actually like to go but I CAN'T STAND the type of music that they play nowdays. I should call one of the rinks near here though and see if they have an "old folks" nite. :)))

Gail worked the snack bar and I was a skate boy on the floor, I still have my whistle yet, and we both had our own skates and still do, both had the pom poms and bells. We worked every Friday and Sunday nights with private parties on Saturday nights or roller hockey. Think I need a new pair of skates the old ones shrank!! lol Bill

I spent the afternoon today getting all my "old" stuff out of my folks attic. Brought it home. Set up the Hot Wheels Duel-Lane Rod Runner Race Set with the optional competition pack in a figure 8 on the living room floor. The rubber bands for the hand shift power-booster were rotted. My bad luck that I had just given my nephew all my rubber bands a few days ago. All my old Hot Wheels that were in the carry case had seen better racing days thats for sure. So what is a girl to do? I got out my brand new Hot Wheels and tore up the track. Even had 4 racing all at once. What a great night.

Tomorrow nite is Barbie nite. Gonna get out the pink Corvette, camper, airplane, horse, townhouse and stuff. Going to set it up in the living room, next to the hot wheels of course, then call up my sister and have her come over and not tell her why. Going to have the camera ready when she walks into the living room. :)))

I remember the pull thru cars too! My kids had them and I managed to step on a few...accidently of course!!lol Stepped on a few Hot Wheels too but felt bad enough about them (even tho I almost killed myself!) to replace them..When 2 pairs of wet eyes are staring at ya like ya was hitler or something, what's a guy to do?? Even ice cream (as much as ya can eat!) wasn't enough, it was time to go to the store and usually come home A Numba One Hewo 'cause I bought a few extra..Like I couldn't afford them..
I'm afraid I'd have to wear the roller skates on my butt and let someone push me around..LOLOL I could still make the "orange crate specials".. with 2 skates, I could make 2 specials!!!One set of wheels on each end of a 3 foot 2x4 and the orange crate nailed to the 2x4 and a piece long enough for handlebars (lol) nailed to the top. I lived at the roller rink too, still have my skates in the attic. (actually they were my moms dance skates) With the little puff balls on them and bells, lol.
My dad played roller hockey at the rink here in town all the time, and my mom was in a skater in a roller skate show (much like ice skateing now) in the U.P. of MI.
I remember how long it took me to learn that backwards thing, and never was very good at it, but hey the boys sure wanted to help get you around the rink ;) so it paid not to be too good at it, lol

and forgot about my marbles!!!! had a ton of those. Its still a standing joke with my family that they asked me once if i had lost my marbles (as in are you nutts) but my reply was "no there in my closet" still haven't lived that one down. Never fails at family events "someone" always brings it up!!!

I got a toy dump truck for Christmas when I was about seven (1951) and it was BRAND NEW (a luxury I didn't often enjoy). I could say "new in the box" but toys back then didn't usually come in boxes, that followed a few years later. I thought it was pretty neat at the time, but recently I realized just how neat it really was. It was a Mack dump truck about 16"-18" long with tandem dual rear wheels and a lever actuated hydraulic ram that dumped the load through a swinging tailgate. It was heavy, made of cast metal. It was a Smith Miller toy, I think my dad paid about six bucks for it(a fortune at the time). I just recently saw a cast Smith Miller truck on eBay, it didn't have nearly as many neat features as mine and was in pretty poor shape, the bidding got up to $375 and I quit watching as it was making me sick. I left home for the military at seventeen and a few years later my folks relocated and didn't feel it was worthwhile to have my childhood stuff packed and shipped. "Cest La Vie"
I also had one of those pneumatic pump operated ping-pong ball guns, I remember my Mom bending over to check something in the oven and I "let her have it" right in the butt, through a thin house dress, the next day she told me she had a bruise the size of a baseball. The wonderful joys of mispent youth.

Ed, My mom threw my Mr. Machine out when I was little. Last year I bought one on the big E for $20. Some went as high as $500.

the post about the girls next door reminded me of when I was out playing in the snow with a neighborhood cutie by the name of Deidre.Just as she finished making a perfect snow angel her big brother came walking up to say it was time to come home. Deidre very quickly made a point to mess up the angel in the snow.Big brother never saw the perfect angel.

I had lead soldiers and airplanes like WWII planes and cars and trucks, played by the hour in the dirt fields. Metal erector sets were big and making crystal radios was really something. How about the old string and two tin cans to talk through. Tinker Toys..those round chuncks of wood with a wood dowl. Home made rubber band guns that shot rubber bands made from good inertubes when they were made from rubber. Bicycles with knee action forks and high rise handel bars for the easy rider look waaayyy before Esy rider was ever heard of, guess we were ahead of our time.
Apple crate scooters made from one metal skate and a 2x4. For runner of the skate board. Get a sheet from mom and hold the two corners with a buddie on a windy day and go like H***. Pillow cases on the beach (SO.CAl) get them wet twirl them around in the air and wa-lah surf bag pillow. Baseball Football cards, Ducan Yo-YO's and Marbles, I was champ with marbles with my Stealies and Boulders. Had a CO/2 streamlinr like they run on thelakes also, go like mad on the school grounds. Box Kites and News Paper Kites made with flour and water for glue. Pea Shooters and SLing Shots all home made.Mumbly Peg played with a knife. Lots of neat stuff to pass the hours away and my all time favorite was the Radio Shows after school and my secret decoder watch/Ring/whatever.Keep em' coming guys.....Back to the good old days... I wish!!!!!!!!!

Boy this is gonna be fun riding with the Santa hat and beard on, windows down (36 degrees now) blaring Christmas music...Gotta love the holidays! If she aint spendin' my money she's wanting to burn gas. LOL....Tis the season to be greedy I guess.

How about prop rods, spud guns, pea shooters, and the interactive winky dink tv game, where you would put a green sheet of clear plastic on the tv screen and draw on it. The old knife games of stretch and mumbly peg were always a good way to pass some time. Wish I had all that time now never seem to have enough

My parents would only give me a rubber band and a peanut. I shot my brothers' eye out!

one present that I spent hours with (as a kid lol) was a "slinky" and we had an upstairs with lots of steps. Remember my Dad saying to get that'bleepity bleep" thing outa the D*** way. "I almost tripped over it!!!" And my Duncan yo yo's!! got a couple confiscated in school and never saw them again..Guess the teachers kids ended up with "our" stuff. I used to dip her chalk end in 3in one oil. Coulda called me "Calvin" back then..LOL
