Cast Iron Powerglide question?
by wheels1950

My son is doing his 62 Chevy Wagon and needs some information!
He has a power glide in it which was rebuilt about 5 Yrs ago and after sitting for 3 yrs. now the trans is leaking.
It seems like the fluid is coming out of the speedometer cable hole.
Someone told me the whole trans has to come apart to fix it is this true or can it be fixed pretty easy?
also need a schematic for that trans!

Thanks "WHEELS"

Sounds like a "gimme ur money" plaudit. That is the last year of the cast iron PG I think, how about upgrading to the later version?
If you are in NE I can give you the name and # of a tranny shop that is not only fantastic, but also honest. Not many left but this one is 3 generations long and the whole family is into rods and antiques.
No, I have no financial interest as is often the case on some quasi-Spam posts here, Im just a satisfied customer.

Merc, the trans is allright the problem is the leak in the speedometer hole. I just want to know if you have to take the trans apart or you have a better idea.
Don't want to upgrade the trans to a aluminum one
We will put up with the leak! and it might not leak once we get the car running again you know how that goes when they sit somteimes they leak and then they stop once the seals swell up.

You need to invest $20.00 on a '62 Chevy Shop Manual. I'm sure this is a simple job. The guys on the 1961 to '64 Chevy forum may be able to help you with your trans question. www.chevytalk.com Hope this helps. Regards, HonestFrank

My '58 came with a 283 w/ cast iron powerslide. I think the trans weighed as much as the engine. I converted it to 3 in the tree. But, there are times when I wish I had left it an auto.

Hey Wheels, It sounds like the speedo gear is worn out. This thing just pulls out when you remove the hold down clamp. Has a O-ring on the gear assembly which should be replaced also. I have a couple of powerglides '58 and '62 but I have a hard time getting parts for them. Our local auto parts don't have anything most of the time. Good luck!
