Barret-Jackson Auction

Just wondering if anyone has been to the Anual Auction in January?Am thinking about taking the brother-in-laws 33 there to run thru.Have heard it's an unbelievable weekend but seems to be mostly" High Rollers",perhaps good for selling the car but not much for intelligent conversation!I believe it's 1500.00 to enter, then 10% of the sale price if you have a reserve. They then charge the fellow buying 5% buyers fee,Wish when I built a house,I could charge for building it,then charge the buyer 5% for buying it!They brag that they have nearly 85% of the cars sold each year.Any comments good or bad???? See Ya!!

Daryle, I did go to the BJ Auction this past Jan looking for a ragtop. It was a site to see. When you first walk in, you walk thru a huge tent that has high end car memorblia and car related art stuff. Great stuff, saw alot I wanted but didnt spend any money in there. The far end of this huge tent is where they have the actual auction going on. If your a high roller you have a "reserved" seat up fron in very nice chairs with little tables etc. If your a regular Joe you'll be sitting in bleachers in the back. Speedvision is filming there inside and out so it leans an air of excitment.

Outside of the "auction tent" there were 4 huge, and I mean huge tents set up with very high dollar cars underneath. Between these huge tents was open, grassy areas that had more cars, just not as high dollar. (medium dollar, LOL)All the cars there were high end, no projects or junk. I had never seen so many Caddys in one place in my life. Tons of 60's and 70's models. There was a couple of 48 Caddy converts but they were way out of my price range. The furthest area from the auction tent must have had 6-8 rows of nothing but Caddys, had to have been 200 of them.

The food booth weren't like were use to. Instead of the regular hot dogs and hamburgeres being served out of a "trailer" they had real resturants like The Outback Steakhouse serving food under a tent with real tables and chairs, not picnic tables. I guess high rollers don't like splinters in their butts!

You won't find many people walking around with gym shoes and car t-shirts on. Most of the men had on dress slacks with polo type shirts on. Some had on blazers. The ladies had on leather slacks and cashmere sweaters. People were very friendly. Everyone there had something in common, cars, so you always had something to chat about.

I don't know any of the details regarding the selling of a car there but I know they did have a registration fee of $125.00 just to have the privilege of bidding on a car. Needless to say, I just looked at everything, enjoyed my time there, and came back to the real world of Michigan still rod-less.

If you get the opportunity to go, DO. You'll have a great time. If you do go, let the guys here know. There are some great cruz nites in the area that they can fill ya on.

Denise, thanks for the info.Should have known you would have been there!!You're a great source of info as you sure do get around!!The best thing about the trip will be the weather, will be nice to go "coatless" for a few days!We may put the scooters in the front of the trailer and stay and ride an extra day or two.I don't know about the"dress code",may have to turn my car t-shirt inside out and wear black socks with my sandles so I "fit in" a little better!!Have a Great New Year and good luck with the new ride!! See Ya!!

selling at the Barret-Jackson Auction

If you do not have a car number by now you had better be calling for one!

Call B/J about the title for the car!! I seem to remember that AZ was requiring local titles, paper work or some such nonsense!!!!

The day and the time of day that a vehicle crosses the auction block all add to the cost of a number to sell a vehicle. B/J keeps a list of how well cars sell during certain days and the time of day too.

It costs more for a number with a "reserve price" than a non reserve price number.

If someone has a number and wishes to get rid of it there usually is a transfer fee charged.

Hi Tony,You were right,we should have been calling for a number earlier, much earlier like July!!They have been full for some time.We decided to give the other auction,Russo and Steele a try.Same weekend,a little less costly but don't think it attracts nearly the people.Have you attended this auction before?Any suggestions on what to do/see while we're there.Think we will slide over and check out Barrett-Jackson anyway, just to see how the other half lives!See Ya!!

Seems like I remember the Russo and Steele auction are a couple of people that split from B/Jackson. The Russo auction is growing.

The high $$$ rollers will be at the B/J sale. The middle of the ground $$$ guys will be looking at several of the auctions. Make your car visible where ever you take it.

People complain here about GoodGuys covering "Forsale " signs in the general parking lot......... well let me tell you the City of Scottsdale Police take care of people that park their cars in various places outside the B/J auction with "For Sale" signs on them. People would park their cars a couple of miles away, on the roads leading to the B/J auction with large "For Sale" signs on them!

The old car "want ads" in the local fish wrap(newspaper) grow by 10 fold!

There is so much car stuff going on in January you can ask various poeple to see what is happening when and where.

Many people try to hit the Snottsdale Pavillions (Pima Rd and Indian Bend Rd) on saturday night. If you drive a hotrod/ collector car to the pavillions there will be little or no prime parking by 5pm or earlier.

Hi Tony,Thanks for the info. We'll be getting to town late on the 16th,I understand the car has to be ready for the auction preview by 10AM on Friday and must remain on display untill it goes thru the auction. The actual auction is Fri/Sat evening. This leaves us a lot of time to kill.I understand there is a World of Wheels show that weekend, anything else we should do/see while we're there? You are correct.the fellows that run this auction are former B/J associates. My brother in law would really like to sell this"showcar" and get into a nice driver.Sounds like there should be a few guys in town with the change to own it,I hope it goes away!! Thanks Again!!

Hi Daryle, While there, my buddys went to another auction held at an airport. I don't remember the name. I don't know if its the location of the Russo and Steele one. It might be a third one to check out. I chose instead to go to a local cruz night to catch up with an old high school buddy and Patrick here on SRS (prixmo1) He'd be able to fill ya in on a few more cruz nights to keep ya busy and a few good restaurants too. Him and his wife make great dinner companions, get in touch with him.

Happy New Year!I'm sure It's nice and warm in Michigan!Perhaps if you would have bought a big ole 4wheel drive truck instead of a convertible, the weather would have stayed nice! Thanks for the info in regard to Arizona. There seems to be auctions all over the place that weekend,at least 4 that I have heard about. We are hoping for just one fellow with a pocket full of gold who's in the market for a flamed hi-boy!!It will be a welcome change just to ride the scooters around in January, don't get a chance to do that much in Nebraska!Have a great Holiday and I'll file a report when we get back.See Ya!!
