CUMBERLAND, Md. (June 21, 2002) -- Super Late Model driver Dwane Shultz, of Meyersdale, Pa., died on Friday night after an apparent fatal accident during the 25-lap feature at The Rock, Allegany Co. Speedway.

Details of the injuries to Shultz and the cause of the single-car accident are not known at this time.

The accident occurred on lap 22 of the feature event, when, while racing in 13th position, the No. 17 driven by Shultz pulled to the inside on the frontstretch, past the flag stand. The car grazed the inside wall before catapulting across the end of the pit road into a cloud of dust and slamming the outside retaining wall in turn one. At that time, the car burst into flames as it sailed along the upper edge of the wall before finally coming to rest, partially on its side, in the middle of turns one and two.

Rescue efforts began immediately from the on-site emergency crew, with assistance from local volunteer fire and rescue companies upon arrival to the scene. Air support did arrive at the speedway shortly after 10:30 p.m., but did not transport Shultz. He was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital in Cumberland, Md.

Shultz was competing as a rookie in the Super Late Model division. He had previously been a multiple feature winner in the Limited Late Model division at the speedway.
