self-help for heart attacks

The recent thread about all the guys with heart trouble made this message really stand out when I got it today. It seems that heart attacks often happen when we're alone. So who's gonna do the CPR? Here's a way to possibly save your own life. Since it only takes 10 or so seconds to pass out, it's important to start this ASAP if you think you're in trouble. Suck in a BIG deep breath. Now let out a big cough. HARD. As hard as you can. Do this every couple seconds until help arrives or until your heart starts beating a decent rythym again. The reason for the deep breath is obvious. The cough constricts the heart muscle similar to the compressions of another person administering CPR for ya. But remember to cough with serious gusto or it ain't gonna work. Sounds kinda strange, but since I got it from a reliable Doctor friend, I figure it can't hurt, and just might save a life. Hell, maybe even mine

Where I work we are mandated to take a refresher first aid course every year
and this is one of the things that is most often stressed due to the fact that we are often alone in the rail yard. Just wonder if I'd have the presence of mind to follow up on my training !!
