I had 235/75/R15 under my 40 coupe, and it was a tight fit.

I have 225/75/R15 on my current 40 Ford coupe and like Retired Marine says it is tight. My 40 has the stock rear end and spring so the transverse (sideways) spring limits tire selection. My rear rims are 15X7 with a 4 and 1/2 inch backspace. That leaves 3 and 1/2 inche from where the rim bolts to the drum to the outmost (front side) part of the rim.
You may not know that a 7" rim will measure 8 inches at the widest section. It is 7" in between the bead of the tire when mounted. Strange but true.......Also different manufacturers will have the same size listed (15/215/60 for example) but the tires WILL vary from manufacturer to manufacturer in actual size by a ruler when measured.

Disclaimer: This is a 40...not a 38..... your results and experiences WILL VARY !!

One more thing---you need to know the cross section width at the sidewall, it's almost always a couple inches wider than the reccomended rim.
