I have heard the occasional silly talk that women should not be in hot rodding. Why not? Heck if more women were into it, we would not have to begs our wives for money for the cars, they would be out there with us.
My wifes dad is on of the founders of the Inliners International, so she came to me already with a love of automobiles. It makes life nice.
Do not despair women. I checked around, not only is the presence of women growing in the scene, but there are several car clubs just for gals.
Do not be discouraged by a few knuckle dragging neanderthals.
If we whoop and whistle at you at a show (which I have been known to do before my wife smacks me in the head), well then just smile and crank up your street rod, leave us watching slack jawed!
Thanks Tony for all those links. I'll get a chance soon to check them all out. Don't get me wrong, I do like spending time with the ladies only, such as the Lipstick Run, but I'm not a huge supporter of "Ladies Only" activites or clubs. Trust me when I tell you I love to spend time with the members of the opposite sex! (you guys didn't know that, right? LOL) I am though always looking for ways to increase my women friends exposure to this great hobby. I love my girlfriends company in my streetrod, but if they arent truely enthusiastic, I would just asoon spend the time with my rodding guy friends.
What Liz has done for this hobby in the last 10 years, regarding acknowledgements of womens accomplishment in the industry can not be surpassed! She is my role model, and life long rodding bud! Thanks liz, for everything you have done and contuniue to do. My hats off to you, (clap, clap, take a bow)
As far as the whoops and whistles, makes us girls feel good, but most of the time ya don't know if they're whistling cuz of you or the rod!!! LOL Keep in mind, I've always got ice in my cooler if that bump on your head starts to hurt!! LOL

I did peek at those web sites Tony, and thanks.
Denise - I can't thank you enough for all the compliments girl. I'm just a car nut doing my thing.... T-Buckets excite me and driving one is the ultimate rodding experience (No offence Big Olds)... I cant help & can't understand why other owners dont drive them much - their loss. Driving to a street rodding event is half the fun - as with the breeze into Evansville with you this past summer - so much fun and laughs - heck, I'm still laughing & smiling! As for being a gal in a mans sport - can't help that either. One old boyfriend introduced me to street rodding & I've been hooked since then.(1973 ouch!) If we gals are making any impact at all in the rodding industry, then how come Street Rodder Magazine thinks we're "Not Interesting" (and I quote). They cant come to grips with the fact that women and men "BOTH" work & contribute to buying/building a street rod, and refuse to acknowledge that women are a part of it. IN past years the mag was supportive of us/our unique stories etc. but that was a different editor too.
Editors come and go & when this ones gone - we will promote street rodding/ driving / and fun in street rods again!

Liz it's a hang-up some men have! But like it or not women like you and Denise are a rare breed. And as far as that goes it will change look at the other hobbies, sports, etc. women were not suppose to do things like that but look at the bright side you could be called a pioneer! I've been asking around about what is going on here in Lincoln when the Power Tour is here and I happen to mention a lady driving a t-bucket and you'll never quess what I was told! You mean Liz is coming here! I was kind of shocked but Liz people, know you just by mentioning lady in a t-bucket. So don't think your not noticed because you are! So keep your chin up things are looking up for women in this hobby!

Thanks for the encouraging words Mike & Randy...thats so cool ..to be thought of in Lincoln and the powertour. Lincoln is only 800 miles for me - a good days drive - I havent been there for a bit, since my last trip to Pueblo Nats and our group toured Speedy Bills shop.I'm dying to do Pueblo again (been 3-4 times now) the scenery enroute and in Colorado is incredible and the highways are excellent.(Our Canadian roads suck). If I'm not scheduled elsewhere on this project T deal, I'm sure I can run south & join in the powertour - havent done it - & am willing to learn. And Randy, I guess your right too pal,a pioneer...(I was honoured to be in Ed Almquist's book) and I have to agree with you..that we gals aren't much different, its just that its impossible to meet other rodding gals, other than by making mention in popular magazines. Every summer our group meets gals that "SAY" they are all going to join us cause we have so much fun, and when it comes down to business they are no where to be found - gets so frustrating sometimes. Last gal-rodder I met was Dorothy Biddinger in her 27 T Roadster on our 1995 Calif.trip. She had (pardon the expression...BALLS) like Denise.(Pardon me Denise)...It was so refreshing to meet a new she-rodder that loves cars ! I agree with Denise that I love being a gal in a mans sport and enjoy their company - street rodders are the Best Folk - bar none! I do my share of rodding in the summer, 12,000 miles this past one...and it is nice to do one trip with all gals - different approach - different response from people on the roads/ shops etc. This years 4100 miles with the gals was a scream and I would never change it - however.....the more the merrier - where are the MORE?

Dorothy was great! She met our group in Vegas and we spent a few days there together and some of the gals went to her place & visited and saw some sites while 2 of us went to get the stiping done on my car. I was introduced to her in Amarillo Texas in 1990 by fellow rodders that knew of each of us and I think we both admired each others cars, driving habits, driving hats and so on.(We both had hilarious driving hats) Miss her & wish she'd come & join us again - I have an address for her, havent talked to her for a bit - I'll send you regards if I can get her...

I think 2 of my best customers are women. They know what they want for one thing. After you have done something for them the first time they know if they trust you or not,so there no screwing around pricin you to death. Some of the ideas they come up with are refreshing sometimes(not allways doable!!) As far as getting noticed,ANYBODY craze enough to drive a t-bucket that kind of miles IS going to get noticed LOL .Dont know how you do it.Total Perf is only down the road a peice from the shop and i have had to fix some of them.I cant fit and it beats me to death after 30 miles!!! So your one tuff lady, hats off to you.I will stick with my sissy air bag suspension and a steel roof. LMA

The thing's been as far east as the Atlantic ocean. That's a haul. It's 1836 miles (the short way, distance-wise) from my place to Liz's. It may be quicker, now, to take the southern route now that the speed limit's back up to 65 but over Lake Superior was teh best was a few years back. It's a tough ride in my '34, never mind her bucket.
Liz'll tell you I've been supporting her cause for a LOOOOOOOOG time now.

Yes Skip - the THING and I have hit both oceans & Mexico, I'm running out of states to do - 5 left. And as Skip knows, when he tells me the shortest route to his place, I pull out the atlas and create the longest. What could have been 1836 (dont give me those crappy Canadian roads), I ran east, to Atlantic City and Wash D.C. making it 2500 miles 1-way. Where Skip told me not to go - I pulled out Mr.Map, and made sure to go there. You only live once - no brain - no pain. I'm not going to sit in my rocking chair and wish I did, wish I could've, wish I should've. I'm going to be rocking saying what a helleva trip! Thanks to Skip, who really has been a believer in a girl doing it, for all his moral support and the numerous times he's fixed my car, ensuring its safe and sound for more miles and to get me back home in one piece. BTW - Barb and I pulled into the Louisville nats hotel this summer, and the wheels had barely stopped rolling, Skip appeared with screwdriver in hand, starting to adjust the idle. We hadn't even parked the darn car yet!

Well Liz...... it could be a good sign that the editor says 'not interesting'. That means that the women are accepted as equals, which they certainly are.In 2000 there was a run for ' 32 Fords only ' to the Blue Ridge mountains. A 1 day cruise to Blowing Rock NC. I could not go because of a work conflict. My wife Ouidasue got in our 32 ROADSTER and went 450 miles round trip in 1 day. She was the only women there driving a 32 but she was just 1 of the gang. There were guys there also that we know to be a big brother in case of car trouble. DEUCE 32 JW was there and others. She had a blast. I think it is great that you and Denise want to come out and play!! RANDY

I've sat back and read all the threads on this post. It got me wondering who the hell is this guy who pretends to speak for the Rodding community as a hole and who elected him in the first place. The comments posted here about how "Real Men" feel about women in Rodding are reflection and confirmation of what I have experianced most of my adult life. We "Dipsticks" thoroughly enjoy women to be involved in this lifestyle. One of the reasons I have been in Rodding and Bikes most of my adult life is because of the ladies. Nothing makes me happier and more interested then seeing a woman of any size, shape, race, etc in a Rod.
It makes her more interesting and establishes a bridge of common interest between us. When I look (and I do) I see someone that I would like to get to know better. If she is attractive then I'm even more interested. Looks are great but add brains and now your talking!
Please ladies spread the word and do what you can to get other women involved.
This just my opinion and observation here ladies, but most of the guys I know share this opinion.
Bob

You know, we are trying to get other gals involved but for whatever reasons, they dont come out and play. I've been driving mostly, alone,.. and with different gals since I hit the street in 85,different events. (most girls will only go outside the door to a show 10 miles away)..(my sister is still complaining about our warm-up run to Oak City Nats in 86 & how we had to haul it..& Pueblo Nats, Mid-America Nats, & the 50's etc...but she wants to go again, cause we have so much fun) The thing is.... (get me the soap box) when YOU (as a guy) want to go to an event/ a show, you call up fellow guys and you can go - no big deal. When I want to go to an event, in say, Syracuse in 95, I cant phone up the local guys to go, (they wont, or cant because travelling with a FEMALE would be taboo, things might happen,LOL.. their wife/gal is insecure in their relationship etc, so doesnt want them to go, regardless, they wont go) Now, try "PLAN B". where I phone up women to go. Might as well talk to another brick wall. They can't - maybe another trip. 1985-2002, and I'm still waiting.... They might get their hair messed, it might rain, it might snow, it might break down, what if, what if, what if we have too much fun? Kathy and Barb of the Lipstick Run and Denise are a rare breed, and without them, I'd still be looking for another wall.I do 1 gals run each summer, and it has a different flavour then all the others. We all look out for each other, help each other, etc....Though I still wouldnt miss trips alone where I get to think and sing out loud, and many where I go alone, but meet pals at the nats etc. Share the weekend of fun and then go home alone.

Liz, Name the time and the place. My wife doesn't get jealous. If she feels uncomfortable at all its envy and then she'll decide to come along! It's all about trust and respect, you either have it or you don't. You can't train it, you can't develop it. We are about 75% complete on the '56 and when its done we'll be back to cruizin' Let us know when you're heading out west agian, or are ya afraid of a few tremors? Just think of the big tremors as kinda like a builtin vibrator when you're driving. In California they even installed what they call "Box Dots" as earthquake training devices. You run over them between lanes and the whole car vibrates. C-O-O-L! Oops, the mind drifted again. Anyway come on out when you can! :D

Bob - sounds like sitting on top of the dryer for the spin cycle. For some reason, I get enough shakin, in that car - guess the short wheelbase will always cause that. Cant say I've been in a tremor, although it may happen one may. I've had snow storms, ice storms, hail, monsoons, flooded roads, sand storms, twisters, bad roads, no roads, Canadian roads, and heat and sun to 110 degrees in Oklahoma - I'm ready for tremors - where do I sign up? Just found out our Lipstick plan has changed and we arent hitting the east coast, as only 2 weeks, so now its TN & area. (no no, been there, done that, got the t-shirt...help!)You're right on, with the mutual respect thing, its few and far between that a gal will let her guy travel with another gal. Kathy (lipstick), sent me to Pueblo Nats with her husband once, and the only one that had a problem with it was the guys back home, wondering what went on. I would love to grab you for a run - all you need is a valid drivers licence and 99 SPF sun screen....Can you go to Lincoln?

I think that ladies who love rodding are a real plus to our hobby. Although my wife doesn't get into the nuts and bolts of it, she loves the people and the cars. My ex-wife had time for neither. My hats off to you gals that own your own cars, wrench on them, and drive them. In my book, you are our dream girls.

I am constantly amazed in this day and age the reluctance of people to break away from what is old and accepted.
It is the same with all aspects of life though. Designers keep making clothing for scrawny little girls and v shaped guys, rather than for full figured big beautiful women (my favortie kind), and guys with real bodies. It is the very few that seem to make the decisions for the many. IT makes me wonder how many women do not get in to hot rodding because they think they will not be accepted. We all need to make some noise.
The nice thing about the women only clubs are that they can get attention as a whole group. Not that I want women seperated, but hey, there is nothing wrong with being a member of more than one club!
If publishers say that women 'are not interesting' that is just thier own opinion. We should all write them and tell them they are wrong. That thier personal opinions do not reflect those of the general hot rodding community.
Some of you may be wondering why I care so much about this subject. It is because I am tired of seeing people not do what they enjoy because they are afraid they will not be accepted. I enjoy things that get me odd looks from my guy friends. Like when I tell them I am going to go look at material swatches, or color chips to get decorating ideas for when we buy our house. I cry every time I hear the song 'Tammy' by Debbie Reynolds, and I like to bake.
I think spending a day at Disneyland with my wife is every bit as fun as spending it at a car swap.
I just hate seeing people ignoring what they want to do because thery think it just would not look right.
Yesterday my wife and I were up on the freeway and I saw a tiny little girl driving a great big 1958 Chrysler Imperial and thought, thank goodness, one real car saved, one less VW on the road! Good for her!
Cheers to all who pursue their interests without fear of judgement!
I know I am bound to regret this ...speaking of magazines
In MHO the only women that magazine publishers care about are those near naked ones who never got near the underside of a car or ever broke a finger nail for that matter. As they are too busy getting air pumped into thier chests and don't know what a tire pump is, and never don a pair of greasy coveralls, as they don't what to do with that much cloth as they are trying to cut it into the smallest triangles the can so it covers the least amount of thier buffed and polished hides. I used to subscribe to several rodding and classic car and truck maga, but as soon as they started to exploit women, I cancelled them one by one. MTCW!

Hey Charlie! Good for you! I mean I can understand men liking to look at women etc. we're not dead either, but I agree I dumped American Rodder when all they did was show those naked broads on the cover - Where's Tex Smith when we need him and his book - miss that one? I tell you, these books dont give a hoot bout REAL women in the sport - thats not what sells...I guess what does, is the naked lady look.

I think if you took a poll, and men answered honestly "I know, men and honesty don't go together!" about 95% would rather look at "real" woman rather than the bad boob jobs and makeup put on with a trowl in AR.
When they first started, they used girl next door types. The last few years they look like strippers from the bad side of town!
How 'bout it AR? We have 5 or 6 REAL lady rodders right here you can feature. It may kill your sales to 12 to 15 year old boys, but us old guys will make up for it!

Now Charlie (moondisc), that a whole nuther story. Those folks who live in the Utica/Rome area.......well........
We're not strange up here where I live, we're just inbred and that ain't strange at all.....is it? Hell, recently a local couple got divorced and the Judge decreed that they we're still cousins.
I moved up here from down south in 1988 and I only thought I knew about rednecks........man, them good ole boy southern rednecks ain't got nuthin on these here rural redneck yankees.

Part of my pre-nup was that she would help me get my 37 on the road. She did.
Then we started building her 41, and she had her hands in every aspect of building it.
We go to shows, and some guys think it's cool. They ask if she has any sisters.
But some come up and challenge her knowledge. And even get pissed when she knows the answers!
These 2 real cowboys at a cruise night asked her question, got mad when she had the answers, then said she didn't really work on it. She got out her photo album with her working on the car, and they said the pics were staged. She told them whatever.
Then they said, "We drive our hotrod! She asked them if they thought we had ours flown in.
I asked them were there car was, and they pointed to a 71 Chevy 3/4 ton 2 wheel drive that looked like it was painted with a brush. My wife and I broke out laughing, and they left in a huff! hehe
All I know is God has blessed me with a woman who loves this hobby as much as I do.

I'm helping to rebuild a 34 Ford 2 door chassis for my friend's widow right now. She's every bit as much of a HotRodder as her husband was and I think it's fantastic. Besides,I'm getting tired of looking at all you old hairy, ugly, male hotrodders anyhow.

Great topic, thanks 50sDream, it gives me a chance to tell you all a little about my wife, Janice.
When we met around ten years ago, Janice didn't know the difference between a Ford and a Chevy.....didn't care either. But, over the past ten years she's become a real gearhead in her own right and damn, I couldn't ask for a more active partner (and friend) in our sport.
We go together to all the events that we attend (and that's a lot of em) and she frequently drives our Camaro (468 BB). She has spent an amazing amount of her time out canvasing for door prizes that we can give away at our BlueMoon cruises and does all of the organizing too. She works her butt off supporting our sport.............
If I go to a cruise or car show somewhere and she's not with me, I just don't feel right and everybody asks for her too.
Yeah, she gets ribbed by the occasional neanderthal, especially since our logo is Hiney Cheeks......but she's good natured about it......and if some AH gets insulting or otherwise out of line, she'll have a whole passle of our male friends intimidating or otherwise putting the jerk in his place (and I'll be leading the pack!).
Ladies in rodding????? I say, Hell Yeasssss!!!!! I just wish other guys were as lucky as I am.
I don't personally know the other ladies on this board except for Denise, but I can tell ya, if/when she hooks up with a steady dude, he's gonna be one lucky man! And, that's probably the case with you other gals here too.
I feel sorry for the guys who don't think that ladies have a place in rodding because I'm here to tell ya thst they certainly do.....and it ain't the place where the Chauvinistic AH's would tell ya either. Ha, but that ain't a bad place either....., so long as it isn't limited to that.
My 2 cents...........

Welcome back bud. Are you sticking around for a while, or going off to some far corner of the earth again?

Hey Charlie!!!!!! It's good to hear from ya and see your post!
Yeah, your right about Jackie........these folks who don't personally know her, can't really appreciate what your saying.
I'm here to tell ya folks, Charile is "right-on" with what he's saying about Jackie......and she's cute as a button too. Her presence will enhance any shop both asthetically and with the wrenching.
Yep, next weekend I'm gone again: Chicago, Kansas City, Vancouver Canada, LA, Phoenix and Dallas. I'm driving the pickup and towing my scoot behind in a little enclosed trailer we got yesterday. So, when I get into good weather, I can do a little riding (maybe a lot of riding). No, not in LA..........I ain't looking to compete with all those cars and crasy drivers with me on two wheels out there on those freeways.

Since I have met both Janice and Jackie, I can attest to the fact they are both true blue hot rodders in all sense of the words. Both you and Charlie are lucky to have found such great women to spend the rest of your lives with, and the girls are equally as lucky to have found you too!! I'm looking forward to taking the girls cruzn in Big Olds in July cuz I know they're as into it as I am. I'm going to put a bug in their ears about coming to Detroit for Woodward in Aug. Might as well plan the vacation time now, you've been talking about coming out. You've got the 40 now as a great highway cruzr and the Olds, well that "tank" can cruz anywere. LOL "Hi" to the girls from me. :)

Thanks Denise:
Ya know we'd love to come to Woodward this year and with a local guide and invitation such as you/yours, how can we refuse. The only show stopper that I can forsee is my job. If they (my employer) don't require that I have to be somewhere else, then we're telling you here in public....we'll take you up on that offer. BTW, I'll also try my best to avoid having to be somewhere else for my job at that time. Gimme the dates please.............
Charlie, what do ya say? Wanna cruise there together?

Ok Denise, I just checked my schedule (that I know of so far) and I'm supposed to be in Portland, Oregon the week before and should get home on Saturday the 10th. Unless something new comes up, I'm optimistic that we can make it.
I'm sending you an e-mail message.......
Charlie & Jackie??????????? What about it???????

I would LOVE to go to Woodward! Friends of mine went last year, and came back with 100's of pics and stories.
We don't have anything going on in Aug that I know of. Now the question is can we get someone to cover the office for us. I'll let you know.
You're right Denise. Bill and I are lucky guys!
Bill, for God sakes be careful on that Harley. You're not as young as you use to be ya know! hehe

Ed, I can hear it just by seeing the pic!! Tater builds em like that. He has a Harley that he built for NHRA drag racing called the Chrome Horse, really sweet! He does a lot of custom bike building and had one that looked very similar to Bill's, same color and every thing, bilds a lot of the billet parts himself. I envy Bill, wished I had his bike and he had a feather we'd both be tickled!!

Well, the front fender and tank started life as a Harley. And the electronic ignition is Screamin Eagle (made by Harley)...................
But, the frame is a 2" stretch made by Rolling Thunder, the motor is an S&S and the Trans is a RevTech 5 speed. It's all belt driven......10" rear tire and a small 15" front wheel. The pics don't really show the true color, very dark purple with black flames. Fred Bidwell did the cutting (widening) and molding of the rear fender and tail light. He also did the molding of the tank......Fred also did the paint.
Yes, it's loud (short straight pipes)......Zomondo howls when I fire it off. The 96" is a pretty radical stroker and it really does thump............
Thanks guys,
BlueMoonBill
