More rear end noise!!!

I took the 35 to the bodyshop and on the way i was running along at about 70 and as I accelerated from 70 to about 90 I noticed a whine. It only happened on acceleration not on deceleration ....I'm thinking I need to tighten down on my pinion bearing just a little. Am I right?

That was probably your tranny whining, waiting for you to shift out of first gear? LOL

Could be the whine of one of Georgia's Finest and his siren?Bill ..... why have the STREET ROD GODS decided to pick on you? 1st the windshield, then the fender, Now the rear end?? You need to give the preacher a few more dollars on Sunday when they pass the plate. On a more serious note, the pinion bearing has a crush sleeve and it must be properly set to eliminate noise. Look at the seal and see if it is wet with gear lube. See if the pinion feels loose or the nut has worked loose. I doubt that the bearing is the source of the whine because it makes noise at 70 mph plus.If loose or not properly set most are noisy in all ranges. Could be. Check it to prevent damage if it is loose. If the nut has backed off, the lash between the ring and pinion will change and damage the gear and it will make noise. Randy

A little noise is normal. I would encourage the use of 75-140 gear oil as recommended by Richmond. 90 gear oil is available and I believe will allow a little more gear noise. When replacing bearings, be sure to use Timken pinion bearings, because the raceways are superfinished to run quiet in pinion applications.

If the pinion nut were to have back off, gear failure would occur very rapidly. Don't just tighten the pinion nut, because it is tightened at assembly to give the correct bearing preload (16-17 inch pounds on new bearings and 10 inch pounds "maximum" on used bearings)...overtightening will cause a rapid pinion bearing failure.
