tachometer

I don't remember if I told you guys about this problem. The only gauge I am having trouble with in the new set is the tach. I called Dolphin & did what they said but no help.
When you turn on the key the tach goes to 1000,(I've seen that before, my son-in-law's race car does that too) but then when you start the engine it revs OK up to 2500 then drops straight down below zero.
Anyone ever had that problem with a tach?
Could it be the Mallory Unilite dist?
Maybe I just got a bad tach. I am going to call Dolphin again Monday unless someone can come up with a solution.

I have a dolphine gage set and the tach has been right for the last year. My ignition is a HEI and I take the signal off the tach term. on the dist. Dave

I have the tach hooked up to the "-" post on the coil as per Dolphins instructions.

This sounds like a stretch but, how 'bout you hook a long wire up to the tach and run it to another cars ignition. Start both cars and see if you read the other cars rpm. Crazy but could tell you if the gage is nuts or not. Dave

Hey Fred....My guess is that the tach is failing inside at the internal counter. When the tach looks at a signal, it changes the pulses into a dc signal to the meter. For it to work fine and then go kaput is not a "it's hooked up wrong" type of deal.

I am not familiar however with how the signal looks off your particular ignition, but it has to switch the coil appropriately and should work.

My guess is the solid state pulse to dc generator inside has gone tango uniform!

Thanks Steve. I hope that's the case. It never worked right. Just goes up to 2500 & then zero. Wierd!
Dolphin told me to send it in & they would check it out but that kinda ticks me off because I don't want a big hole in my dash until they decide to return it.
