Engine specs.---- kicks and giggles
by Rat Rod Mac

This is for all of you motorhead math addicts out there. See if you can figure out my compression and horsepower. Here are the facts and figures. 283 bored .030", Flattop pistons mic .047" deckheight, head gasket mics .049" right out of the box( compression thickness unknown), cam specs.- 214/224 - 442/465 at .050" hyd. flat tappet, 327-350 hp vette aluminum intake, hei, block huggers, not sure if I'm going to run a Edelbrock 500 cfm or a 600 carb. yet, heads are off of a 305 they are 60cc chambers 1.74/1.5 valves polished the runners matched to gaskets. I can't think of anything else, hope this is enough info. Thanks, RRM

Since the car will be painted bright yellow and Chevy orange would not look to good I painted it a shade of tan. The interior will be tan also.

I`m sorry, That was a poor attempt at making another joke, If you would have said orange, I would have given you an extra 30 hp in my calculation. Sounds like the project is coming along.

You should go to www.bluemoongear.com and post your pics on the projects page so we can all see your outstanding work. I am one of the few who have seen your quality hot rod project.

Dear Mac; Its been a year Christmas since you were in my garage, where are you at on your rod? I figure with the specs you gave your 288 cu in. SBC has 8.7 to 1 CR.

Dave, I just thought of something. This weekend we are coming over to Pittsburgh for a volleyball match. We're leaving Friday after work and staying at the Best Western- Parkway Center Inn. Then all day Saturday will be at the North Catholic High School, 1400 Troy Hill Road. If you're interested maybe we could hook up for a B.S.session or maybe break bread together Friday night. I could bring some snapshots along and you can fill me in on what you have been up to. Let me know. See ya. RRM

Hey Ed, I hope your 10.5/1 was a guess because I don't want the compression so high as to have fuel octane problems. I was shooting more for 9 to 1 or 9.5 to 1. Anyway it should push the Rat down the road just fine. Thanks for your input. RRM

I'm sure that it's more than 50, but less than 1000hp. Hope this helps.

Well Rat Rod Mac , no one else will it try so here goes. A 283 stock bore is 3.875. plus you have it bored .030. ( 3.875 + .030 = 3.905 ). To find the area of a circle you take 3.905 divide by 2 = 1.9525. square it ..... 1.9525 x 1.9525 = 3.8122. this is the area of your cylinder bore. This area -3.8122 x stroke of crankshaft ( 3inches )= 35.929. Multiply 3.8122 x .047 to get volume of the deck height ( .179 ), then multiply the area 3.8122 x .049 to get the volume held in the head gasket ( .186 ). Then to get the volume of the heads you multiply 60 x .061 - the conversion factor for changing cc's to cubic inches ( 3.66 ).Now that everything is in place....... Heads 3.66 plus deck .179 plus head gasket volume .186 = 4.025 _______ cylinder area 35.929 divided by 4.025 equals 8.926 to 1 compression ratio. It will be very slightly higher due to the fact that the head gaket will be compressed more that .049. Felpro head gaskets tell the compressed volume in their catalog. Others may. Valve reliefs in the piston will lower it some. Now that you know how... you can calulate changes to your combination. I would GUESS about 240 to 250 horsepower.Check for valve clearance before final assembly with flat-tops and this much cam lift. Randy ......The Steeldeuce....

Dave and Randy and the rest of you guys, thanks for the responses.Yeah Dave, it has been awhile! The Ole Rat is coming along slow but surely. The chassis is pretty much done now, and as a matter of fact I got the call just this last Saturday that my body has finally come in. Ordered it on 3/26/01. Went up after work monday to check it out. I'm not much of a body man, but it looks OK to me.One of the reasons it has taken me so long to do this thing ( besides cash) is Little League, Basketball and Volleyball, but we have our priorities. Important things first. The rat will always be there, but not these guys! You know what I mean.
