'77 Caddy transmission

The trans in the Caddy that I bought for the engine/trans is burned up (I knew that when I bought it). I don't know anything about GM trannies, and which one this would be. Does anyone know offhand which model they used, and which model would fit? The top of the 'bell housing' dips down. Are the 700R4's made to fit all cars, or just certain ones? I'm not looking for high performance, more for cruisin' down the highway. Thanks in advance.

Phil I make be incorrect but I have never seen a 700R for the Caddy. The R200 comes in a BOP pattern and should bolt up. It is available in Turbo GN Buicks and SS Monte Carlos with V8's.

It came in others but may be too light for the torque of the Caddy.

It might be better to put a 400 Turbo back behind the Caddy. Big inches makes a good bit of torque and you could pull a rear end ratio similar to a Caddy and still get good mileage and decent permformance in a big Pontiac. Properly prepared, T400's are almost bullet-proof.

DISCLAIMER: I do not sell transmissions, I am not biased ... I have both a T400 and a 700R, your situations and experiences will net different results.

It might be BETTER to put a 400 Turbo Back behind the Caddy......I would redo the stock 400 Turbo and forego a lighter duty OD transmission. Investigate a different converter, yours is for a heavier vehicle and too tight (low stall).

Thanks Deuce and Digger. I was figuring on staying with the original tranny, but didn't know which one it is. All the automatics that I worked with in the past were older Fords, and they are easy to identify. GM has so many models, I didn't know whether to spit or go blind. Deuce, when you said to investigate a different TC, are there other GM models that I should look at, or would it be an aftermarket?
Thanks again guys.

Phil...... there is a small approximately 2" x 3 and 1/2" tag on the drivers side of the transmission near the speedometer gear shaft outlet and the numbers on it will tell you everything about it. The serial number, application, date of manufacture and other good information.

I would consider a aftermarket TC and go with their recommedations as to size and stall. They will need to know weight of the vechicle (approx), the engine specs and the rear end ratio with the rear tire size to make a educated selection. IF you want to save a few dollars and do it yourself, look for a vehicle that is close to your ride in engine size, gear and weight, and has a 400 transmission and you should be close. A 455 GTO or Trans Am would be my first choice.

The transmission rebuilder will have a selection of converters and some can even cut one for you to match everything up. He wants you to be happy.

I have a switch pitch GM converter and special pump in my roadster that has two different stall speeds on it. Came in early 400 Turbo equipped 65 -66 Buicks. Low is 1000 and high is 2800 to 3000. Controlled by the brake light switch, the way GM did it. Way to much to put here. This post is starting to look like a novel. Email me if interested.

Phil;
Yours should have a 400 behind it. I have a couple of them here and the 78 has a 400
