Old License Tags

I am almost ready to make the trip down to the tax assessors office to register my rod for street use. I have purchased a pair of 63 tags from e-bay and want to use them on the truck. Does anyone know what is involved in doing this? I know in the past at some of the local swap meets there is always someone selling tags for this purpose and they have some sort of form to be filled out that I assume is submitted to the DOT for registration purposes. I live in Texas and have been to the TxDot site and can't find anything. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

Well, Capn, the easiest way is to move to IL. I've been running with 1958 plates on my car for a couple years. As long as we have the registration and the legal plates in the trunk, they don't seem to mind. Never been stopped. LOL.

I don't think Texas has a YOM (year of manufacture) program, but I could be wrong.

Georgia has one, pre 58, but I run one on my 69 Camaro and never have been questioned about it. According to one Trooper here, they don't even pull you over for license violations any more here. Has to be accompanied by murder or something else? Can't tell you about what you're gonna have to do.

Alright fellers....I found the info I wanted. Thanks to SRJ giving me the proper wording to use..."Year of Manufacture"...I typed that in my search engine and it led me to this site www.io.com/~dork/bolthole/yom.html Which in turn gave me the low down on Texas. Yeoman it says you guys in Ill. can use them for display only, must have regular tags on you, and you can use any state plate you want..Texas troopers would never let that fly! Thanks for the assist SRJ!

Steve, thanks for the info, I didn't know that Georgia had a yom clause for tags. Guess I'll be looking for a 50 tag in Charlotte next month! I'm just afraid of the ruckus I'll cause at the good old Burke County tag office when I go in to register a fifty two year old tag!

Tried to do it here in Meriwether Ga. they didnt know what I was talking about. They should have a form, has number of plate verified by your county. You keep that and current plate in car. Use correct year plate on car.

Chopped, not unusual to find these policemen not informed.

Here is a copy of the actual words.....

SECTION 2.

Article 2 of Chapter 2 of Title 40 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to registration and licensing of motor vehicles generally, is amended by striking subsections (a) and (b) Code Section 40-2-41.1, relating to authentic historical Georgia license plates, and inserting in their place the following:
(a) As used in this Code section, the term "authentic historical Georgia license plate" means a license plate originally issued in the year 1957 or earlier and originally required to be displayed on motor vehicles operated upon the streets and highways of this state in the year 1957 or earlier pursuant to former motor vehicle registration laws of this state.
(b) The owner of any antique motor vehicle manufactured in 1957 or earlier shall be authorized to display in lieu of and in the same manner as the license plate otherwise required under Code Section 40-2-41 an authentic historical Georgia license plate which clearly represents the model year of any such antique motor vehicle, provided that the owner has properly registered such antique motor vehicle for the current year as otherwise required under this chapter and has obtained a current Georgia license plate or revalidation decal for such antique motor vehicle. Such currently valid Georgia license plate shall be kept in such antique motor vehicle at all times but need not be displayed in a manner to be visible from outside the vehicle.

And the best thing you can do is go to web site http://www.legis.state.ga.us/Legis/2001_02/versions/sb97_SB97_APmat_11.htm and make a copy of the section two page to keep with your car info. That's what I do.

Steve, thanks again for the link, I've aready printed it out. If I'm reading it correctly we don't have to register the old tag, just keep current tags for the vehicle in the car, along with a copy of the senate bill in the car to show old Barney when he stops me for a tag violation?

Guess I'll be looking for a 1950 Georgia tag at Charlotte!

It's legal here in Mich. Have YOM's on my '33 and my '53. Have driven the '33 all over the country without any complaints from the law even though Mi says they are only good for parades and shows. There is always a show somewhere I could be going to.

If'n you fellers need IL tags 65 - 70 drop me a line. I've got a few sets that I'm look'n to get rid of...$5 each or $8 a set (if I have em) plus postage.

I don't have a limitless supply but I do have some. Some aren't in A-1 condition but they are passable and restorable.

I've been running a set of 65s on my 65 Fairlane for several years. I carry my IL Antique plates in the car. And if you must know, they have the number "2 UGLY"!

That's a cool plate. Was the original color black and bare copper?

By the way, the auction says the reserve wasn't met. Did they give it to you anyway? If he did that's a pretty good deal.

Original is black with silver, Copper tarnished to much,so it got painted also.Copper was real plentyfull around here in the thirtys so it seemed only natural to make tags out of them,But they were so soft it turned out to be a 1 year deal. I e-mailed the seller and he agreeded to throw in the S.D. tag I also bid on if I paid the reserve($55. still a deal) on the AZ tag, he pays shipping also. What a country !

My Apoligies, After a lot of research I found out that AZ made the cooper plates for 3 years, 32-34 and they painted either the numbers or the background depending on year. I did find out that so far my tag has the highest number issued from Pinal county. Well back to my research project.

Capn,
I guess you got your answer. But here's the straight poop on texas YOM plates, which I've had on a few cars. You take the plate to a Tx DMV office (not the county tax assesor) they make a copy of it on a copier and fax it to the state DMV special plates div. and they have to approve it as a genuine (and also that its not registered to another veh) Tx plate. After they approve it you fill out a Tx application for antique or classic plates form and send it in to Austin, a lady in special plates dept named Carmen Ford really knows her stuff some of the others don't. They will notify you of approval and you then go to the county tax office, register the vehicle and they will give you a registration tab that you attach to the plate. I've always registered my cars as antiques, I'm not sure if you have to for the YOM plates, but it is good deal $55 for five years plus no vehicle safety inspection and no registration sticker uglying up tour windshield. The plates all expire in March at five year intervals, the current ones run out in Mar 0f 2003. You're not suppose to register a "Street Rod" as an antique but lots of people do, including myself. It might get a little touchy if you use this vehicle as the everyday grocery getter. Good luck with it.
