Our '37 2 door Chevy just had a minor problem. The wire from the ignition switch (relocated to the dash) to the Ampmeter just burned up. Not much damage, but others caught too. We have Condon & Skelly for the insurance. has anyone had any claims with them or others like this. My mechanic ran over and said about $500.00 to rewire the car with a new harness of sorts. Will the ins. company come out to look?
thanks, Alan

The ins. co. will probably send an adjuster to have a look at it. While your repairing the problem, throw your ammeter away and get a volt meter. You'll save yourself a lot of trouble down the road and the volt meter gives you all the info you need about your battery condition.

Mike is right. Dump the ammeter and put in a voltmeter. They don't have as much current going to them. I had a ammeter wire burn up on me many years ago, so I won't consider using them at all.

I agree with the group on ammeters! Way tooooooo long of length of wires to carry all the current thru the system.
If you think that the system is overloaded, DO NOT REPLACE with the very same system in the very same way. It sounds to me that the feed wire to the system is too small. Please look at your load and figures total amps and go to a wiring chart to make sure that the feed wires are sufficient. This is a typical symptom of adding alot of electrical accouterments, and the high output alternator to go with and not upgrading the system.
Then again, it could have been a short....another forensic job to find out why.
Last....use a fusible link to protect the system and do not locate them inside the car!

Sounds like too many dollars for the amount of damage that was done. Call the comapny that made the harness and explained what happened. They will probley send you replacement wires for the ones that burned. Ron Frances did when I had nine wires that burned in my Olds this past June. My guy replaced the burnt portion of all nine wires and one of the wires that ran from the alternator to ?, all for $75.00. Looking at the harness you can't tell where the original wire starts and the new one begins. He did an awesome job on the soldering and shrink wrap, he did it in an area where a support bar under the dash is connected to this bracket. To me, $500.00 sounds like a lot of money unless he's rewiring the whole car.
